First free any trapped line, then check for overfilling, line memory, incorrect spooling, a spinning lure, or reeling while the drag is slipping. If the line roller is seized or the bail is bent, stop and have the reel inspected.
Start with the kind of tangle you have
Line twist often shows up as coils or loops that spring off the spool; a wind knot is a tightened loop that catches during a cast. The causes overlap, but the pattern helps narrow the first check.
- Loops or coils during a cast: check for an overfilled spool, line memory, or twist already in the line. Zebco lists overfill and line memory as causes of casting tangles. Zebco’s troubleshooting guide
- Twist that returns after respooling: check how the line was installed and whether the line roller turns freely. Shimano lists incorrect winding and a binding roller bearing or bushing as possible causes. Shimano’s FAQ
- Line buried beneath the spool: remove the spool and untangle the trapped line before fishing again. Zebco’s spinning-reel manual
Clear the immediate tangle
- Open the bail and ease the line out. Do not yank a tight knot; pulling hard can damage or weaken the line.
- If line is trapped underneath the spool, remove the spool according to the reel’s manual, then carefully free the line. Zebco’s manual specifically recommends removing the spool to clear an under-spool tangle.
- Cut out any section that is kinked, frayed, or too tightly knotted to free cleanly. Reconnect or replace it before casting; damaged line can fail under load.
Check the spool fill and line condition
Reduce overfill
A spool filled too close to its rim can release coils during a cast. Zebco’s troubleshooting and combo-setup guidance recommend stopping about 1/8 inch below the spool lip or rim. If the line is overfilled, remove enough to leave the recommended clearance rather than trying to solve the problem with casting technique alone.

Consider line memory
Line that retains tight coils can tangle as it comes off the spool. Zebco identifies line memory as a cause of casting tangles and suggests replacing twisted line or playing it out without a lure to remove twist. Match replacement line type and rating to the reel and your fishing use; the cited guidance does not endorse a particular brand.
Respool carefully
Incorrect winding can add twist before the first cast. Shimano notes that reels with slow or super-slow oscillation must have line wound on using the reel. Zebco says to check that line from the supply spool feeds off in the same direction as the reel’s rotor turns, and its setup guide recommends laying the supply spool flat, keeping light tension, and watching for coils. Follow your reel maker’s directions rather than assuming one supply-spool orientation works for every reel and line.

- Watch the line between your fingers as it goes onto the reel. If it forms loops or coils, stop and flip the supply spool, as Zebco advises.
- Continue only while the line is laying evenly and without visible coils. Stop at the fill level specified for your reel; Zebco’s general guidance is about 1/8 inch below the rim.
Shimano’s FAQ describes incorrect winding as a possible source of twist and says slow- or super-slow-oscillation reels need line wound on using the reel. Zebco’s setup guide provides its supply-spool and coil-check steps.
Check the lure and how you retrieve
Stop a lure from spinning
A lure that rotates as it is retrieved can twist the line. Check that it runs true. For inline spinners, Zebco recommends using a ball-bearing swivel. That is a rig-specific option, not a fix for overfilling, poor spooling, or a binding reel roller. Zebco troubleshooting

Do not crank against the drag
If a fish is pulling line out against the drag, turning the handle winds line while it is slipping through the reel. Zebco warns that this builds twist and can lead to tangles or reel malfunction. Let the drag work instead of reeling while line is being pulled out. Zebco’s spinning-reel manual

Line roller does not turn
The line roller guides line onto the spool as you retrieve. Shimano lists a binding roller bearing or bushing as a possible cause of twist. Its FAQ says a roller that has stopped spinning may have seized after saltwater intrusion and should be sent to Shimano Service for inspection. Do not assume that adding oil or replacing a part is appropriate for every model; follow the reel’s service instructions. Shimano’s FAQ

Bail will not close or appears damaged
Shimano lists a bent bail wire, or corrosion and debris around the bail pivots, as possible reasons a bail will not close. If the wire is bent or a component is seized, avoid forcing it; consult the model-specific manual or arrange service. Shimano’s FAQ
