Its planned Universal Secure Access Module (U-SAM) would combine NXP’s MIFARE and Sony’s FeliCa technologies so a phone could support contactless services used in different markets. The companies announced target dates for samples and deployments, but those targets do not establish that a product shipped.
What was the NXP-Sony joint venture?
On November 14, 2007, NXP Semiconductors and Sony Corporation announced Moversa GmbH, a Vienna-based joint venture owned equally by the two companies. They described it as a company to drive global adoption of contactless smart-card applications in mobile phones using Near Field Communication (NFC).
The announcement listed nominal capital of €100,000 and total capitalization of $28 million. Its stated headquarters were Gutheil-Schoder-Gasse 8-12, A-1102 Vienna, Austria. These are figures and details reported by Sony and NXP in 2007.
What was the U-SAM meant to do?
U-SAM stood for Universal Secure Access Module. Moversa was to plan, develop, produce, and market the secure module. It was designed to include both NXP’s MIFARE and Sony’s FeliCa operating systems and applications, with support for other contactless systems and applications when customers required them.

#1 Best Overall
- It not only supports Mifare cards and Class A and B cards conforming to the ISO 14443 standard, but also supports NFC and FeliCa contactless technology.
- This is a USB hot-pluggable device that complies with the CCID standard and is ideal for applications such as personal identity security authentication and online micropayments.
- This is a USB full-speed device (12 Mbps), which reads NFC tags at 106 kbps、212 Kbps and 242 Kbps, allowing faster read and write speeds and higher efficiency
- To increase the safety factor, you can choose to configure an ISO7816-3 compliant SAM card slot in the ACR122.
- Widely used in areas such as access control, electronic payment, bus e-ticketing, highway toll collection systems, network verification, logistics, and supply chain management.
The U-SAM was not presented as a standalone NFC radio or a consumer accessory. Used with an NFC chip in a mobile phone, it was intended to provide a common secure platform for contactless services. The proposal addressed a practical compatibility problem: different countries and operators had deployed different contactless technologies, complicating efforts to offer a single phone across markets.
Which services and customers did Moversa target?
The companies highlighted mobile payments and public-transport ticketing. They expected the platform to help handset manufacturers build phones that could work with multiple contactless protocols, while giving mobile operators, transport operators, and credit-card companies a basis for rolling out services.

That was the venture’s stated business case, not proof that a particular phone, payment service, or transit system adopted the module. Its emphasis was on an embedded secure chip and cross-border compatibility, rather than on selling a reader or a finished consumer product.
Did NXP and Sony launch a universal NFC chip?
The 2007 announcement set a target of first secure-chip samples by mid-2008 and initial commercial deployments by the end of 2008. Those dates were plans announced by the companies. They should not be treated as evidence that samples were delivered, commercial deployments occurred, or a U-SAM reached handsets.

The available company records do not establish retail availability, shipment volumes, or a confirmed handset deployment for the U-SAM. The accurate conclusion is that NXP and Sony announced a universal secure-module concept and launch timetable; a completed commercial launch is not documented in the cited record.

NXP’s 2009 annual-report filing says Moversa’s activities had ended by the close of 2009. It also records that NXP acquired Sony’s 50% stake on February 23, 2010, and merged Moversa with NXP Semiconductors Austria GmbH. Moversa therefore did not continue as a standalone NXP-Sony venture.

How to understand Moversa’s significance
- Technology: It proposed combining MIFARE and FeliCa in one secure module for NFC phones, with room for additional systems if customers required them.
- Intended reach: Its goal was to ease compatibility across markets for mobile payments, transit ticketing, and related services.
- Outcome: The public record establishes the venture, its stated plan, and its subsequent end and absorption by NXP—not a successful retail product launch.
