Choose an input layout or input method that can produce the characters you need, works with your operating system and apps, and suits the way you type. Then check your physical keyboard separately: its key arrangement and printed labels do not always match the software mapping. In many cases, you can set up another layout without changing the Windows display language or buying a new keyboard.
What is the difference between keyboard language, layout, and keyboard?
A software keyboard layout maps key presses to characters. An input method can also let you compose text—for example, by typing a phonetic spelling or using an input method editor (IME). The operating system may group these options under a language, but the language label alone does not tell you exactly what each key will enter.
The physical keyboard is the hardware: its key positions, shapes, and printed legends. The software mapping and the physical keyboard can differ. Microsoft notes that changing a keyboard layout alone does not change the Windows display language. Microsoft’s Windows language and keyboard settings guide explains the distinction.
How do I choose a keyboard layout for my language?
Start with the writing system and the characters you actually need to enter. A language may have a conventional layout, or it may be more practical to use a composition method or IME. Windows input profiles include options such as Bangla Phonetic and Microsoft Wubi, illustrating that language input is not always a one-key-to-one-character mapping. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard identifiers and IMEs reference for examples.

Compare your candidates using these criteria:
- Character and script coverage: Can it enter all the letters, marks, punctuation, and symbols you need? Does it require composition or an IME?
- Operating-system and app support: Is the input option available on your computer, and does it work in the applications where you write?
- Typing method and familiarity: Does it match a layout you already know, or does it use a method you are willing to learn?
- Language switching: How often will you change input options, and is switching straightforward for your routine?
- Hardware fit: Do the keyboard’s key arrangement and printed labels suit your hands and help you find the keys you expect?
There is no universally fastest or most ergonomic layout established by the cited guidance. The best choice depends on your writing needs, software support, familiarity, and hardware.
Do I need a different keyboard to type in another language?
Usually, no. If the existing hardware works for you, installing an appropriate software layout or input method may be enough. Printed legends are labels, not a guarantee of the software mapping currently selected, so check both rather than assuming one reveals the other.

A language- or region-specific keyboard may be useful if you want matching legends or a particular physical key arrangement. Apple’s guide identifies ANSI, ISO, and Japanese keyboard forms and shows regional legend differences; use it to identify the hardware you have, not as a guide to configuring macOS input sources: Apple’s Apple keyboard layout identification guide.
What if I only need a few extra symbols?
If you write mainly in a Latin alphabet and only occasionally need an extra symbol, keeping your current layout may be simpler than adding and switching layouts. Microsoft describes ways to enter occasional symbols without changing layouts in its guidance on switching between languages using the Language bar. If you regularly type another script or many characters, a dedicated layout or input method may be more convenient.

How do I add and switch keyboard layouts in Windows?
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Open the options for the relevant language and add the keyboard layout you want.
- If the layout is not listed for your current display language, check the language associated with that layout. A matching full language pack is not always required.
- Switch among installed layouts using the taskbar input-language icon or press Windows key + Space.
- If you change the Windows display language, check the selected input layout afterward. Microsoft warns it may change too; verify the input indicator at sign-in before entering a password.
For current Windows instructions, including removing a layout, see Microsoft Support.

Look at the keyboard itself rather than inferring its arrangement from the operating system’s language name. Key shapes and positions vary across physical formats, and regional versions can print different legends. If you need to identify an Apple keyboard, compare its keys with Apple’s country- and region-based identification guide.

The ISO catalogue lists ISO/IEC 9995-9:2026, Edition 2, dated January 2026, covering groups and mechanisms for multilingual and multiscript input. That standard is relevant background for how input mechanisms can be organized; it does not identify which layout is right for an individual user.
