For a demanding edit or render, connect your computer to power and select its high-performance mode if extra heat, fan noise, and energy use are acceptable. Then reduce unnecessary background activity and check CPU, memory, and disk usage while reproducing the slowdown. These steps can give the system more room to work, but no single CPU setting guarantees faster playback or exports: the project, cooling, memory, GPU, storage, codec, and application settings all matter.
Start with power and cooling
A laptop running on battery may prioritize battery life over sustained performance. Before a long export or other heavy session, plug it into its power adapter when practical. Keep vents unobstructed and use the computer on a surface that allows airflow; a power mode cannot overcome thermal limits or inadequate cooling.
Choose a high-performance mode for sustained work only when its trade-offs are acceptable. The names and behavior differ by operating system, and Apple’s High Power Mode is not the same feature as Windows Best performance.

Set Windows 11 to Best performance
- Connect the computer to its power adapter if you are about to do a sustained workload.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode.
- Select Best performance. Microsoft says this can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed, at the cost of power use and potentially more heat and battery drain.
- When the demanding session is over, return to a balanced or recommended mode if you prefer quieter, cooler, or more energy-efficient everyday use.
You can also reduce background activity. In Windows, review Settings > Apps > Startup and disable startup apps you recognize and do not need. Close unneeded applications before editing. Do not end unfamiliar system processes: removing the wrong process can disrupt Windows or an application.

Windows visual-effects settings can be adjusted for best performance, but that is a general responsiveness choice—not a reliable way to accelerate rendering or improve a particular creative app.
Choose a Mac power mode when the model supports it
On macOS Ventura or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery; on desktop Macs, the setting may appear under Energy. Select Low Power, Automatic, or High Power mode for battery or power-adapter use. Apple describes Automatic as the default balance.
High Power Mode is available only on certain Macs. Apple’s page currently lists Mac Studio introduced in 2026; Mac mini introduced in 2024 or later with a Pro chip; MacBook Pro introduced in 2024 or later with a Pro or Max chip; and MacBook Pro introduced in 2021–2023 with a Max chip. Model eligibility can change, so check Apple’s current supported-model list and instructions before looking for the setting.

High Power Mode lets the fans run faster. Apple says the additional cooling may let the system deliver higher performance in very intensive workloads, and cites video editing and 3D applications as cases where playback may be smoother and exports faster. It also describes demanding graphics workflows such as 8K ProRes 4444 and 8K DNxHR color grading. These are examples, not a promise of improvement for every Mac, project, or export; fan noise may increase. For lighter editing and ordinary design work, Automatic is a reasonable default.
Find out what is actually slowing the work
Reproduce the lag, dropped frames, or slow export while watching resource usage. In Windows, open Task Manager and use its Processes and Performance views. Microsoft recommends monitoring CPU, memory, and disk usage. On macOS, Activity Monitor provides corresponding resource views.
- CPU stays busy: the processor or another CPU-intensive task may be limiting the operation. Check which process is using it and whether the workload is a CPU-heavy effect, encoding step, or background task.
- Memory is under pressure: close unneeded applications and compare installed RAM with the requirements for your project and application version.
- Disk activity is high: media reads, cache writes, or other storage work may be holding up the task. Check where the application, cache, and media files are stored.
- Another process is busy: pause or close only software you recognize and do not need during the session.
A single utilization reading does not prove the cause. Look at what is busy during the specific operation that feels slow, and compare the result across playback, effects, and export rather than assuming that a powerful-looking CPU must be the limiting factor.

Compare the setup with the exact application and workflow
Requirements differ among video editors, 3D tools, and graphic-design applications, and they change between versions. Check the requirements for the installed application version and the media or document workload you actually use. Do not transfer Premiere recommendations to Blender or another creative app.
Premiere Pro 25.x as a version-specific example
Adobe’s requirements page applies to Premiere versions 25.0–25.6 and was last updated March 30, 2026. Adobe says its minimum specifications target HD editing, while its recommendations cover HD, 4K, or higher. The recommended Windows CPU is Intel 11th Gen or newer with Quick Sync, or AMD Ryzen 3000 Series/Threadripper 3000 series or newer. Adobe also recommends 16 GB RAM for HD, 32 GB or more for 4K and higher, and an 8 GB GPU.
Adobe’s recommendations also address storage: a fast internal SSD for the application and cache, plus an additional high-speed drive for media. A separate media drive can ease storage-workflow constraints, but it is not a CPU setting and will not directly fix CPU-bound effects or encoding. Adobe does not specify a particular external interface or drive model in these recommendations. Blender and other creative applications
Blender maintains its own official hardware requirements and notes that they are updated over time. Check the requirements for your installed Blender version at Blender’s hardware requirements page. Use the same version-specific approach for other editors and design tools rather than treating any one CPU, RAM, or GPU recommendation as universal.
Return to a quieter everyday setting
After the sustained session, restore a balanced or automatic mode if the extra power use, heat, or fan noise is not worthwhile for routine work. On Windows 11, change Power mode back from Best performance in Settings > System > Power & battery. On a supported Mac, select Automatic in System Settings > Battery or Energy.
