Windows 11 ARM-based desktops can run native Arm64 apps and many x86 and x64 Windows apps through Microsoft’s Prism emulation. But Prism does not translate kernel drivers, so compatibility depends on more than whether an app opens: drivers, anti-cheat systems, peripherals, and performance all matter. Check the exact versions and devices you rely on before buying.
How Windows 11 on Arm runs apps
Windows 11 on Arm can run software built for Arm64 directly. Apps without a native Arm build may run through Prism, which emulates supported x86 and x64 user-mode code. Microsoft says most Windows apps can be installed and run, including apps obtained outside the Microsoft Store; that broad guidance is not a guarantee for every app, edition, plug-in, or release. Ask the publisher about the version you need.
Native Arm64 apps
A native Arm64 build is generally the most direct fit and offers the best performance. Microsoft lists native Arm versions of Microsoft 365 apps including Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote, along with Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve. Availability can vary by edition and release, so verify with the publisher. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Arm FAQ describes the platform and examples.
Emulated x86 and x64 apps
Prism broadens the range of apps that may run when a native Arm version is unavailable, but “can launch” does not mean “works fully” or “runs well.” Microsoft documents support for additional x86 instruction extensions—including AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, and F16C—in Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer. Compatibility still depends on the app and its dependencies.

Prism availability and capabilities depend on the Windows release and device. Microsoft describes Prism in Windows 11 24H2 and availability on Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X series processors, with expansion to other Windows 11 devices. Optional per-app emulation settings can improve compatibility in some cases, but may reduce performance or cause an app to crash or fail to launch. Why drivers and system tools can still fail
Prism emulates user-mode app code; it does not translate kernel-mode drivers. Microsoft’s requirement is direct: “Any kernel mode components must be compiled as Arm64.” A program may therefore open while a feature that depends on its driver does not work. This limitation applies to more than hardware accessories. Driver-dependent antivirus or antimalware tools, virtualization software, printing or PDF utilities, assistive technologies, and CD/DVD utilities may have limitations. Customization apps, input method editors, cloud storage software, and other products that install services or system components also warrant a check with the developer. Ask whether the exact product version supports Windows on Arm and whether all required drivers and helper components have Arm64 builds.
Will games run?
Check each game separately. The game’s user-mode code may be emulatable, but the complete setup can also depend on graphics requirements, a launcher, background services, and anti-cheat components. If a title relies on an anti-cheat driver that is not built for Windows 11 Arm PCs, it may not work. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Arm FAQ warns about this driver issue.

In an update published December 9, 2025, Microsoft reported that Easy Anti-Cheat added Windows on Arm support through work with Epic, Qualcomm, and Microsoft, joining BattlEye, Denuvo, and XIGNCODE3. Microsoft named Fortnite as an example. This is platform progress, not a promise that every game using one of those systems works: publishers decide whether a particular title and version enable a supported configuration. The announcement is in the Windows Experience Blog’s December 2025 gaming update.
The same update said that Windows Insiders on Arm could, starting in August 2025, download and play supported titles directly through the Xbox PC app, including the majority of games in Xbox Game Pass. The statement is limited to supported titles and the Insider rollout; it does not mean that every Game Pass game is playable locally on every Arm desktop.

Can you use printers and other peripherals?
Microsoft says most printers work with Windows 11 Arm PCs, including Mopria-compatible models. More generally, a peripheral needs a driver built into Windows 11 or an Arm64 driver supplied by its manufacturer. That is guidance for the category, not certification of a specific printer, scanner, webcam, audio interface, controller, dock, or USB device. Confirm the exact model and hardware revision with the manufacturer. See Microsoft’s Surface printer guidance for a possible installation route: if a manufacturer’s installer does not support Arm, Windows Settings may be able to install some peripherals, such as printers. That Surface-specific advice is not a guarantee for every desktop.

Start with the apps, games, and hardware you cannot replace. For each item, verify its support with the publisher or manufacturer rather than relying on the fact that another x86 or x64 app runs.

- Apps: Check whether the exact version has an Arm64 build. If not, ask the publisher whether it supports Windows on Arm and Prism, and confirm that required plug-ins and helper tools are supported too.
- Drivers and system components: Find out whether the software installs a kernel driver, filter, virtual device, anti-cheat component, or other system-level service. Confirm that each required component has an Arm64 version.
- Games: Look for confirmation from the game publisher for the current title and anti-cheat configuration. Support announced by an anti-cheat vendor alone does not establish that a particular game is enabled.
- Peripherals: Confirm that Windows includes the necessary driver or that the manufacturer provides one for Arm64 Windows. Check the precise model and revision.
- Performance: Identify whether the workload runs natively or under emulation, then look for credible tests of the exact desktop configuration and workload. Compatibility by itself does not establish speed, stability, or plug-in support.
Keep those checks separate when comparing machines: app coverage, driver and peripheral coverage, supported games, and workload-specific performance are different questions. A program that launches under Prism may still be too slow for the job or lack vendor support.
Which Windows version does the guidance cover?
This article describes Windows 11 on Arm. Prism’s capabilities vary by Windows release; the instruction-extension support described above applies to Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer. Microsoft’s FAQ states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so its current Windows 11 compatibility guidance should not be treated as a description of legacy Windows 10 Arm systems. Drivers and publishers’ compatibility decisions can also change over time; check their current documentation for the exact PC, OS release, and software version.
