Choose a CPU by matching it to the creative applications and footage you use—not by picking the processor with the most cores or the highest ranking. For Premiere Pro, core count and Intel Quick Sync can matter, especially with H.264 or HEVC footage. Photoshop often gains little beyond about eight cores, while Illustrator’s published minimums do not identify a fastest processor. Compare current, version-matched application benchmarks and the full cost of the system before buying.

Start with your most demanding regular task

Video editing, photo editing, and vector design do not place identical demands on a processor. List the work you do most often, then prioritize the task that most affects your time: Premiere timeline playback or exports, Photoshop operations, or complex Illustrator documents. A CPU that scores well in one application is not automatically the best choice for the others.

  • For Premiere Pro: weigh sustained multi-core performance and, if you edit H.264 or HEVC, whether the exact Intel processor’s Quick Sync media engine is usable with your setup.
  • For Photoshop: prioritize strong per-core performance and architecture rather than paying for a very high core count.
  • For Illustrator: treat Adobe’s processor baseline as a compatibility floor, not a performance ranking.

Adobe’s Premiere 26.x technical requirements, updated September 9, 2026, recommend Windows Intel 11th Gen or newer with Quick Sync, or AMD Ryzen 3000 series or Threadripper 3000 series and newer. These are broad processor-family recommendations, not evidence that every CPU in a family performs alike. Adobe’s Premiere technical requirements also recommend 16 GB RAM for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher; memory is part of system balance, not a reason to choose a particular CPU.

What matters for Premiere Pro

Core count helps, but it is not the whole decision

Adobe’s processor guidance recommends at least eight cores and a minimum 3.2 GHz for its recommended setup. Use that as broad guidance for Premiere workloads, not a universal pass/fail rule: actual performance depends on the processor, project, effects, media, and system configuration. More cores can help with work that scales across them, but weigh the benefit against price, power, cooling, and the other creative applications you use. See Adobe’s processor, memory, and GPU recommendations.

Check Quick Sync against your footage and workflow

Adobe says Intel Core i7 and i9 processors, as well as recent mobile Xeon processors, provide Quick Sync technology that accelerates H.264 and HEVC decoding or playback. If those codecs make up much of your footage, check the specific processor’s media-engine capabilities and confirm that your Premiere version and settings can use them. Quick Sync’s stated role here is decoding or playback; its presence alone does not establish faster performance for every effect or export.

What matters for Photoshop and Illustrator

Photoshop usually does not justify buying cores indefinitely

Puget Systems’ benchmark-based Photoshop guidance says performance gains beyond roughly eight cores are limited, and advises weighing architecture and price. That is a third-party recommendation based on its testing, not an Adobe requirement. Puget’s current guidance names AMD Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 7 9850X3D among leading Photoshop CPUs, but that model leadership is a dated, application-specific snapshot—not proof either is best for a mixed Premiere and design system. Check the benchmark version and your own workload before treating a named model as a shortlist candidate. Puget Systems’ Photoshop hardware recommendations.

For Windows Intel and AMD systems, Adobe’s Photoshop 27.x requirements include AVX2 and SSE 4.2 support. Review the Photoshop desktop technical requirements for the supported processor details for your platform.

Illustrator’s minimum is not a speed recommendation

For Illustrator 30.0 and later, Adobe lists a multicore Intel processor with SSE 4.2 or later, or an AMD Athlon 64 with SSE 4.2 or later. This is a published minimum, not comparative evidence about performance on complex files. Use Illustrator-specific benchmarks if that application is a major part of the workload. Compare CPUs and systems on equal terms

  1. Confirm compatibility: check the requirements for your application version and operating system, including any processor instruction-set or media-engine needs.
  2. Match the benchmark to your work: look for current Premiere results for your editing tasks and codecs, and separate Photoshop or Illustrator results for design work. Avoid treating a score from one application as a universal CPU ranking.
  3. Match benchmark versions and configurations: compare results from the same test group and similar memory, cooling, power limits, and GPU configurations. Puget Bench separates results by application and benchmark version because software changes can affect performance; submitted systems can also differ in setup and thermal limits. See Puget Bench for Photoshop.
  4. Price the complete platform: include the compatible motherboard, memory, cooler, and GPU—not just the processor. Prices change, and the sources cited here do not provide current system costs, so verify them when you buy.
  5. Choose for sustained use: consider cooling, power, and the kind of work you do for long sessions, rather than relying on a peak clock or core count alone.

How to make the final choice

If Premiere is the priority and you often work with H.264 or HEVC, compare CPUs that meet Adobe’s current recommendations and investigate Quick Sync on the exact Intel model. If Photoshop is the priority, give more weight to architecture and relevant Photoshop results than to cores beyond roughly eight. If you split time among Premiere, Photoshop, and Illustrator, look for balanced performance across the applications you actually use and compare the total platform cost. No single CPU is established as universally best for this mixed workflow.
