When did imec establish its Qatar presence, and where is the hub?
Imec announced the project on 25 November 2025 in an agreement with Invest Qatar and the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council (QRDI), with government support. It named QSTP as the hub’s location and set an early-2026 opening target.

What will imec research in Qatar?
The hub is planned as a Gulf regional base for advanced computing architectures that enable AI and deep-tech work supporting a sustainable society. Its agenda combines chip-design services and research with efforts to develop local capabilities and partnerships.

Chip design, AI and new workflows

These are stated areas of intended work; the public announcements do not specify a project-by-project research schedule or identify particular chip products the hub will produce.
How many people will the Qatar hub employ?
Imec said hiring would start immediately after its November 2025 announcement and set a goal of 100 employees at the Qatar hub by 2030. That is a planned headcount, not a count of jobs already filled or a guarantee of 100 new positions beyond the hub’s existing staffing.

Imec’s planned roles span site management, R&D, research engineering and support. Its careers information also mentions management, finance, human resources and other functions. The available information does not provide a complete list of current openings or a breakdown of the 2030 target by role.
Will there be internships, PhD places or other training?
Talent development is part of the hub’s plan. Imec intends to pursue development programs, internships and PhD initiatives with universities, research institutions, companies and startups. QSTP has also described postdoctoral opportunities as part of the effort.

The announcements establish these as intended pathways, but do not name participating universities, publish application dates or specify how many places will be available. Applicants should check current official vacancy and program announcements rather than assume a particular opportunity is open.
Why is imec expanding into Qatar?
The project is linked to Gulf Cooperation Council ambitions in advanced semiconductors and to Qatar’s economic diversification and sustainability priorities. Building local capability in AI hardware, advanced computing and chip design is a central rationale: the aim is not only to conduct research, but to connect it with regional skills, partners and potential applications.

Imec describes the approach as open innovation, with co-location and collaboration intended to accelerate applied research, technology transfer and commercialization. QSTP says the hub will sit within an ecosystem of nearly 400 research, technology and innovation entities. That figure describes the park’s broader ecosystem, not the number of organizations formally involved in imec’s specific programs.
In the announcement, imec president and CEO Luc Van den hove said the hub was intended to contribute to regional semiconductor innovation and a more diversified, sustainable economy. Invest Qatar CEO Sheikh Ali Alwaleed Al-Thani presented the partnership as evidence of Qatar’s ability to attract global industry through its investment ecosystem and infrastructure. QRDI Council secretary-general Eng. Omar Ali Al-Ansari said the agreement would support Qatar’s ambition to become a hub for R&D-driven innovation and a trusted node in the global technology ecosystem.

The primary announcements do not state the project’s budget, any subsidy amount, construction cost or revenue forecast.
