Windows 11 on Arm runs Arm64 apps natively and can emulate many x86 and x64 Windows apps. That does not mean every program or feature will work: drivers must be built for Arm64, and games can fail when they rely on unsupported anti-cheat drivers or graphics features. Check the exact app, peripheral, game, Windows version, and PC before relying on compatibility.
Will your programs work on an Arm PC?
It depends on the Windows version and the software’s architecture and dependencies. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes apps that run as user-mode code from drivers and other components that need deeper access to Windows.

Emulation is built into Windows: it translates x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions while the app runs and caches translated code. Native Arm64 builds avoid that translation overhead; Microsoft describes them as the best option for performance, responsiveness, and battery use. Neither emulation nor a native build guarantees that every feature works. Microsoft’s explanation of emulation on Arm and its Windows on Arm FAQ explain the architecture distinctions.
What Prism changes on Windows 11
Prism is Microsoft’s emulation technology for supported Windows 11 Arm devices. It was introduced with Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft says it improves performance and reduces CPU use compared with earlier emulation technology. It is tuned for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, and some performance features require hardware in Snapdragon X series processors. Check the PC’s Windows release and processor rather than assuming every Windows 11 Arm device has the same Prism capabilities.

Why an app can start but still be partly broken
Emulation supports user-mode code; it does not emulate drivers. An app may open but fail when it loads an architecture-specific DLL into a Windows process, hooks a shell component, or depends on a driver-backed feature. Microsoft’s emulation guidance describes this boundary, while its x86 app troubleshooting guidance covers additional failure cases.
Do printers and other peripherals need Arm64 drivers?
Yes, when the peripheral depends on a driver: Microsoft says kernel-mode drivers and user-mode print drivers must be native Arm64 binaries to work on Arm64 Windows. An x86 or x64 installer cannot make an incompatible driver usable by installing it on an Arm PC. The device may still work if Windows already has a suitable driver or the manufacturer provides one for Arm64. Check the peripheral maker’s current support information and the driver requirement for the specific device.

On a Surface Arm PC, Microsoft recommends checking for updates at Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. If a peripheral’s manufacturer installer does not support Arm, Microsoft suggests trying setup through Windows Settings and checking with the maker for Arm-compatible software. This is Surface-specific guidance, not a universal driver or firmware update process for every PC brand. See Microsoft’s Surface guidance on software and peripherals.
Will games and anti-cheat work?
Check each game and the features you intend to use. Microsoft warns that some games may not work when they rely on anti-cheat drivers that were not made for Windows 11 Arm PCs. A launcher opening does not establish that online multiplayer, anti-cheat, updates, or every graphics feature will work. Ask the publisher about support for the game’s current build and anti-cheat system. Microsoft also points to a crowdsourced Works on WoA compatibility listing as a reference, not a guarantee.

Graphics requirements can also matter. Microsoft’s x86 troubleshooting guidance identifies OpenGL versions above 1.1 and hardware-accelerated OpenGL as potential problems for x86 apps. It says x86 apps using DirectX 9, 10, 11, and 12 work on Arm, but that platform guidance is not a promise that every title, driver, or graphics path will work. What to check before choosing an Arm PC
Make a list of the software and accessories you cannot do without, then verify each against the exact Windows version and device. These checks focus on the sources of compatibility differences:

- App architecture: find out whether the publisher offers Arm64, x86, or x64 software. Windows 11 can emulate many x86 and x64 apps; Windows 10 on Arm supports x86 emulation.
- Driver dependence: check for kernel drivers, print drivers, anti-cheat, virtualization, security, or device software that requires a driver.
- Graphics path: confirm the game or app’s OpenGL or DirectX requirements and whether the relevant features are supported.
- Current support: verify the specific app or game version with its publisher and the peripheral with its manufacturer.
- Game mode: check single-player and online or anti-cheat features separately; support for one does not establish support for the other.
What to try when an app fails under Prism
On Windows 11, Microsoft provides per-app emulation controls. These are targeted troubleshooting options, not general performance tweaks. Changing them can reduce performance, cause unexpected crashes, or stop an app from launching. Change one setting at a time, note its original value, and revert a change if the app gets worse.
- Find the affected app’s executable in File Explorer.
- Right-click the executable and choose Properties > Compatibility.
- Open the emulation settings and change one option that is relevant to the failure.
- Test the app. If the change does not help or causes new problems, restore the original value before trying another option.
Microsoft’s available controls include hiding x64 emulation capability, hiding newer emulated CPU features, changing multi-core synchronization behavior, disabling the compiled-code cache, and disabling hybrid execution for x86 apps. The appropriate option depends on the app; changing settings without a specific problem to solve can make performance or stability worse. If changing settings does not fix the app
Some x86 desktop apps that prohibit dynamic code generation may fail under emulation. Architecture-specific shell extensions and DLLs also need builds that match the architecture they run in. If the app still fails, check with its publisher for an Arm64 build or advice for Windows on Arm; a compatibility setting cannot replace a missing Arm64 driver or component.
