These signs do not prove an offer is fraudulent, but they are reasons to stop and check independently. No checklist can certify a token as safe.
Red flags that should make you stop
Guaranteed returns or claims of little risk
Promises of unusually high or guaranteed profits, or claims that an investment has little or no risk, are warning signs identified by the FTC and the SEC. Confident wording does not make a speculative investment safe, and potential gains are not guaranteed.
Countdowns, exclusivity, and pressure to act now
“Last chance” pricing, limited-time countdowns, claims of exclusive access, or supposed inside information can be used to stop you from checking an offer. The SEC specifically warns about social-media pitches that rely on exclusive or confidential information. Treat urgency as a reason to slow down, not as evidence that the opportunity is valuable.
Hype, testimonials, and familiar accounts
A crowded feed, glowing testimonials, screenshots of account balances, celebrity endorsements, or a message from someone you recognize does not independently verify a project. Accounts can be impersonated or compromised, and promotional material can be misleading. The SEC describes a presale pattern in which promoters build interest in a memecoin on social media, encourage buying to push up its price, and then sell before the hype fades; the price may fall rapidly afterward. This is a risk pattern, not proof that every presale is a pump-and-dump.

Unsolicited pitches and private-message approaches
Be wary of investment offers that arrive unexpectedly through social media, messaging apps, or a romance or friendship connection—especially when the conversation moves to private channels and turns into a request to invest. Trust or familiarity is not a substitute for checking the offer independently.
Crypto payments to an unfamiliar address
A request to pay in crypto, particularly to a wallet address supplied in a pitch, deserves extra scrutiny. Transfers can be difficult to recover. Verify payment instructions through a channel you found independently rather than relying on a link, QR code, or address sent by the promoter.

Extra money demanded to withdraw or recover funds
If a platform displays profits but requires a new tax, fee, or deposit before you can withdraw, do not send more. The SEC warns that supposed withdrawal costs can be another demand in an investment scam. Likewise, a paid “recovery agent” promising to retrieve lost crypto may be targeting people who have already been scammed. Never give a promoter or recovery agent your private key or seed phrase.
How to check a presale or promotion before paying
- Stop before clicking or transferring. Do not let a countdown or another person’s pressure set your deadline. Take time to verify the claims and payment details.
- Search independently. Search the project, company, and promoter alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud,” and “complaint.” Look for consistent, attributable information outside the promotion itself; do not treat testimonials in the pitch as independent evidence.
- Explain the offer in plain language. Read the offering materials and ask what the token is meant to do, how the project is funded, what rights—if any—the token gives its holder, and how a buyer could sell or exit. If you cannot explain the terms or the exit path, do not treat technical jargon as proof of legitimacy.
- Check the people and firm behind the offer. For an offer involving securities, use Investor.gov to check the seller’s or firm’s background and registration status. A registration check is one verification step, not an endorsement or guarantee of safety. Whether a token offering involves securities depends on the facts and circumstances; an offering may need registration or a valid exemption, and a claimed exemption is not a blanket endorsement.
- Confirm messages through a separate channel. If a pitch appears to come from a friend, public figure, or official organization, contact them through a channel you locate independently. Do not share private keys, seed phrases, identity details, or financial-account information with a promoter.
If you have already sent crypto
Do not pay an additional withdrawal charge or recovery fee. Preserve the messages, wallet addresses, and transaction details, then report suspected fraud to relevant official channels. Crypto transfers may be difficult to recover, and no recovery outcome can be promised.

What these checks can—and cannot—establish
This guidance reflects U.S. federal investor education. Legal requirements and remedies can vary by jurisdiction and the facts of an offer. Not every token is automatically a security, and the absence of registration alone does not prove fraud; conversely, a registration check does not prove an investment is safe. The SEC’s investor alerts are educational materials, not rules or regulations creating new legal obligations.
