Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe five DNS threats to prioritize are cache poisoning, DNS hijacking, DNS denial-of-service attacks, DNS tunneling, and random-prefix (NXDOMAIN) exhaustion. They target different parts of the DNS system and different security goals: trustworthy answers, administrative control, service availability, or confidentiality. Defending against them takes more than one setting: combine DNSSEC, strong account controls, resilient DNS infrastructure, and useful query monitoring.
NIST’s 2026 Secure DNS Deployment Guide announcement warns that “A disruption or attack against the DNS can impact an entire organization.” DNS is therefore part of an organization’s security posture, not just a way to look up website addresses.
How the five DNS threats compare
| Threat | Security goal and layer at risk | Possible indicators | Best-fit controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cache poisoning or spoofing | Integrity; recursive resolver | Forged or unexpected DNS answers | DNSSEC validation |
| DNS hijacking or authoritative-account compromise | Control; registrar, authoritative service, resolver, or device | Unexpected nameserver (NS) or address (A) record changes, or altered DNS settings | Phishing-resistant MFA, least privilege, change alerts, and recovery procedures |
| DNS DDoS or amplification | Availability; exposed DNS service and victim network | Unusual query or traffic spikes | DDoS-capable DNS, caching, rate limiting, and upstream protection |
| DNS tunneling | Confidentiality and malware control; client, resolver, or authoritative service | High-entropy or unusually frequent subdomain queries | Centralized resolvers, query logging, protective DNS, reputation checks, and anomaly detection |
| Random-prefix or NXDOMAIN exhaustion | Availability; authoritative service | A surge of queries for unlikely, non-existent subdomains | DNS Firewall controls, rate limiting, and resilient authoritative infrastructure |
These are distinct attack patterns, but they can overlap. For example, an attacker who compromises a DNS provider account may change where a domain points, while a flood of DNS traffic can make a legitimate service difficult to reach without changing any records.
1. DNS cache poisoning: getting a resolver to return a false answer
A recursive resolver caches DNS answers so it can respond quickly to later requests. In cache poisoning, an attacker tries to place false information in that cache. Users who rely on the poisoned resolver may then be directed to an attacker-selected IP address rather than the intended destination. Cloudflare describes cache poisoning as entering false information into a DNS cache so queries return an incorrect response and users reach the wrong websites.

What helps
DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) use cryptographic signatures to let a validating resolver check the origin and integrity of DNS data. Use DNSSEC for domains when the registrar and DNS provider support it, and ensure validation is enabled on the recursive resolvers your organization controls. DNSSEC is not a general-purpose DNS security shield: it does not, by itself, stop volumetric DDoS attacks or fix compromised endpoints.
2. DNS hijacking: taking control of where a name resolves
DNS hijacking is a change to DNS control or settings that causes a legitimate domain to resolve through attacker-controlled infrastructure. The change might happen at a registrar, an authoritative DNS provider, a recursive resolver, or a device. Unlike cache poisoning, which targets the integrity of a cached answer, hijacking can involve unauthorized changes to the systems or accounts that determine the answer.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
NIST’s Secure DNS Deployment Guide, SP 800-81r3, treats authoritative DNS integrity, authentication, access control, and monitoring as core deployment concerns. This makes protection of registrar and DNS-provider accounts as important as resolver configuration.
Reduce the chance of an unauthorized change
- Enable phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA) for registrar and DNS-provider accounts.
- Give each user only the permissions needed for their role, and remove access that is no longer needed.
- Turn on alerts for nameserver, DNS record, and account changes. Route alerts somewhere an attacker who controls the account cannot silently alter.
- Document an out-of-band recovery process: know how to contact the provider and regain control if the normal account is compromised.
- Review authoritative DNS settings and account access periodically, rather than relying only on resolver-side protections.
3. DNS DDoS and amplification: overwhelming a service with traffic
DNS commonly uses UDP, and a DNS response can be larger than the request that prompted it. Attackers can exploit publicly accessible UDP services to reflect traffic toward a victim; amplification means the resulting traffic can be greater than the traffic the attacker sent. CISA’s 2019 alert describes reflective DDoS as relying on publicly accessible UDP servers and bandwidth amplification factors.

For authoritative nameservers, the practical risk is not limited to an attacker sending queries directly to the domain’s normal DNS service. Reflection can send unwanted traffic at a separate target, while a direct flood can exhaust DNS service capacity and disrupt legitimate lookups.
Build availability across the DNS path
- Use authoritative DNS infrastructure designed to absorb distributed traffic, with upstream DDoS protection.
- Apply caching where appropriate so repeated lookups do not all require fresh work from authoritative servers.
- Use rate limiting and DNS Firewall controls to limit abusive query patterns. Cloudflare documents DNS Firewall protections, caching, and rate limiting for authoritative nameservers.
- Plan for capacity and distribution instead of relying on a single nameserver or a single network path. Test operational procedures for a DNS outage, including how staff will reach provider support.
DNSSEC is not a substitute for these availability controls: signatures help validate DNS data, but do not absorb or filter a volumetric flood.

4. DNS tunneling: hiding malware traffic in DNS queries
Malware can encode command-and-control messages or stolen data in DNS queries and responses. Because DNS is often allowed through firewalls, this technique can provide a route for communicating with an attacker-controlled data server. Cloudflare describes DNS tunneling as using DNS traffic to carry data between malware and such a server.
Use DNS visibility to find suspicious behavior
- Route organizational DNS through centralized resolvers where practical, rather than allowing devices to use unmonitored resolvers.
- Keep DNS query logs and apply protective DNS policies, including checks against domain reputation data.
- Look for unusually frequent queries and high-entropy subdomain labels. These patterns are clues for investigation, not proof by themselves that a device is compromised.
- Investigate the source device, related domains, and nearby query activity when an anomaly appears. DNS logs can help expose tunneling, malware beacons, and other unusual subdomain behavior.
5. Random-prefix or NXDOMAIN exhaustion: forcing uncached lookups
In a random-prefix attack, an attacker sends many queries for unlikely, non-existent subdomains. Since each new name is generally not already cached, requests can reach the authoritative servers. The volume of lookups consumes resources even though the names do not resolve to valid destinations; NXDOMAIN is the DNS response indicating that the queried name does not exist.

Cloudflare documents this attack pattern and describes DNS Firewall controls that detect and block attack queries, alongside rate limiting and resilient authoritative infrastructure. Unlike a flood made up of repeated requests for the same name, random names reduce the benefit of ordinary caching.
Which DNS protections should come first?
Build a layered program rather than choosing one product or protocol to cover every threat. NIST’s 2026 Secure DNS Deployment Guide announcement emphasizes DNS’s integral role in organizational security; the controls below address different failure modes.
- Protect administrative control. Secure registrar and authoritative-provider accounts with phishing-resistant MFA, least-privilege access, change alerts, and an out-of-band recovery plan.
- Validate DNS data. Deploy DNSSEC where supported and make sure controlled recursive resolvers validate signed data.
- Centralize and observe queries. Use managed resolvers or protective DNS policies, retain query logs, and investigate unexpected spikes or unusual subdomain patterns.
- Engineer for availability. Select DNS infrastructure with appropriate distribution, capacity, caching, rate limiting, and upstream DDoS protections.
- Assign ownership and response steps. Decide who receives DNS change and anomaly alerts, who can contact the provider, and how to restore correct records or service during an incident.
These controls complement one another. DNSSEC addresses authenticity and integrity; account safeguards reduce the risk of unauthorized changes; and DDoS protections, caching, and monitoring help address availability and covert DNS use. No single measure covers every layer.
