You can’t run a speed test directly on a Chromecast using a documented Google feature. Instead, check which Wi-Fi network it uses, then run a speed test on a phone or computer connected to that same network near the TV. Compare that result with a test near the router to help identify whether Wi-Fi coverage is weaker by the TV.

Check which network your Chromecast uses

Confirm the Chromecast’s connected network before testing. The settings route depends on the device:

  • Chromecast with Google TV: On the TV, open the profile or settings area, then go to All settings → Network and Internet. Google TV troubleshooting also directs users to Settings → Network & Internet to check Wi-Fi and the selected network. Google’s Chromecast connection guide and its Google TV troubleshooting guide cover these checks.
  • Earlier Chromecast models: In the Google Home app, select and hold the Chromecast tile, then open Settings → Device information → Wi-Fi. This shows the connected network, not its measured speed. Google’s connection guide gives this route.

Network-band support varies by model. Google says the first-generation Chromecast supports only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so don’t assume every Chromecast can use the same Wi-Fi bands. See Google’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.

Test the Wi-Fi near the TV

  1. Connect a phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi network shown in the Chromecast’s settings.
  2. Stand near the TV and run an internet speed test on that device.
  3. Note the result and where you took the test. It estimates the network performance at that spot; it does not measure throughput on the Chromecast itself.

For a useful comparison, run another test on the same device and network near the router. This comparison is a practical diagnostic, not a Google-prescribed test or a published pass/fail threshold. If the result is notably better by the router, distance, Wi-Fi coverage, or interference near the TV may be contributing.

If other devices also have trouble

Check whether other devices can connect to Wi-Fi and access the internet. If they also fail, investigate the router or internet service before focusing on the Chromecast. Google’s Reconnect me troubleshooting guide recommends checking other devices’ connection and internet access.

If other devices work but Chromecast playback does not

Check the Chromecast’s selected network, restart the relevant devices, and check the router’s firmware. Google also recommends considering router placement, interference, and whether the wireless network can support the number of connected devices. For interference reduction, Google advises: “To help prevent Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference, move your streaming device further away from your TV. Also, don’t let it touch other devices, wires or cables.” See Google’s connection troubleshooting steps.

On Google TV, try playback in an app after checking its Wi-Fi settings. Successful playback indicates the connection works for that use, but it is not a numeric speed measurement. Google’s Google TV troubleshooting guide covers network and playback checks.

Compare with a wired connection if available

A compatible Ethernet adapter is another option in Google’s connection troubleshooting guidance. If you try one, compare wired playback or a speed test on a connected device with your Wi-Fi results, keeping in mind that device, location, and connection type differ. Wired results can help you assess whether Wi-Fi is contributing; neither path directly measures Chromecast throughput. Google does not name a specific adapter model in the cited guidance, so check compatibility with your Chromecast generation before choosing one.

What speed does Chromecast need for 4K?

Google lists a connection requirement of at least 20 Mbps for 4K content on supported devices. The support page does not state a publication year. Google also cautions that internet service availability and other factors affect playback, so meeting this minimum does not guarantee smooth streaming. Check Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer requirements.

Check for network restrictions

Some Wi-Fi networks require users to sign in through a captive portal, as is common at hotels, schools, dormitories, and businesses. Google says streaming devices do not support these networks. See Google’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.
