There is no universally cheapest Ethereum alternative for sending money across borders. Stellar-based routes, Solana stablecoin settlement and Ripple Payments work at different layers, and a low blockchain fee is not the same as a low-cost transfer. The right choice depends on the sending and receiving countries, amount, funding method, currency conversion and payout route.

What “Ethereum alternative” means for a cross-border payment

These options are not interchangeable crypto tokens or simple competitors in a fee ranking. Stellar describes network rails connected to local-currency services called anchors; Solana presents institutional stablecoin settlement infrastructure; Ripple sells a managed cross-border payment service. Their differences include who operates the route, who holds funds or keys, what counterparties are required, and how the recipient gets usable money.

For a consumer, the practical question is not only which network sends an asset cheaply. It is whether a service supports the exact corridor and asset, what it charges to fund and convert the transfer, and whether the recipient can receive or cash out the funds. For a business, integration, custody, compliance responsibilities and payout coverage also matter.

Compare the complete transfer, not just network fees

Calculate the amount the recipient ultimately receives after all charges. A useful comparison holds the transfer amount, sending country, receiving country, funding method and payout method constant.

  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • Total delivered cost: include provider charges, network fees, exchange spread or FX markup, funding and withdrawal fees, and recipient cash-out costs.
  • Corridor access: confirm the exact countries, currency pair, payout rail, and supported asset-and-network combination. General claims about global reach do not establish that a particular route is available.
  • Timing: distinguish blockchain confirmation from the time needed for fiat payout and final availability. A fast confirmation does not guarantee a fast bank deposit or cash pickup.
  • Asset and issuer: identify who issues a stablecoin, what redemption route exists, and whether the recipient is willing and able to hold it. A stablecoin’s peg design may reduce exposure to ordinary crypto-price movement, but does not remove issuer, redemption, access or local-FX risk.
  • Custody and compliance: determine who controls the keys or funds, what identity and sanctions checks apply, and which regulated entity serves each country.
  • Practical support: check recipient wallet or account requirements, customer service, error handling, reversibility, and how the recipient can obtain local currency.

How the main alternatives differ

Option What the source describes What to verify
Stellar and local anchors Network rails connected to partners that can accept traditional currency and arrange local payout. Stellar lists remittances, peer-to-peer and account-to-account transfers, payroll, supplier invoices, government payments and ecommerce as potential uses. Whether an anchor or payment provider serves both countries, supports the needed currency and asset, and provides the desired payout; its fees and the recipient’s cash-out options.
Solana stablecoin settlement Institutional infrastructure for cross-border payments, card settlement, treasury and global payouts. Solana’s institutional page describes live pilots and other ecosystem activity. Whether a business or payment provider actually offers the specific consumer or business route, its all-in price, and the fiat payout arrangements. The page does not give a standardized retail remittance cost.
Ripple Payments A managed cross-border payment service that Ripple says can settle in fiat or stablecoins, with first- and third-party payouts. Whether the relevant Ripple entity offers the service in both countries, the currencies and payout methods supported, and the quoted total cost.

Stellar: local partners are central to the route

Stellar’s cross-border payments explainer describes anchors as local partners that can accept traditional currency from a paying business and provide local payout in the recipient’s geography. That makes local partner coverage—not just the underlying network—essential to whether a transfer is useful.

Stellar’s payments page claims access to more than 475,000 cash-to-crypto on- and off-ramp locations worldwide. This is a network-level figure, not proof that a supported ramp exists for a particular country, currency or payment. Check the relevant anchor and its terms rather than assuming every listed location supports the same service.

Stellar’s stablecoin explainer identifies USDC and EURC as issued by Circle, GYEN and ZUSD by GMO Trust, and AUDD by Novatti. It reports average network confirmation of 3–5 seconds and average network cost of $0.000005 per operation. Those are network metrics, not a promise about fiat payout time or what a customer pays end to end. Stellar also says not every wallet, exchange or ramp supports every stablecoin.

Stellar’s own pages report different network-cost figures: its cross-border explainer gives an average transaction cost of $0.0007, while its stablecoin explainer gives an average cost of $0.000005 per operation. Stellar’s payment FAQ describes underlying fees as under 1 U.S. cent per 100,000 operations. These figures use different page wording and measures; none establishes an individual transfer’s total customer price. The FAQ also says, “Each anchor or payment service provider offers their own fee structure.” Businesses remain responsible for determining their compliance obligations.

Solana: institutional settlement, not a published retail price list

Solana’s institutional payments page describes cross-border payments, card settlement, treasury and global payouts. It says Visa has moved millions of USDC between partners over Solana in live pilots to settle fiat-denominated payments authorized over VisaNet. The page also describes a Western Union USDPT stablecoin launch as planned for 2026 and identifies stablecoin activity involving Worldpay and Fiserv.

These examples indicate institutional and business payment activity, but they do not establish that a consumer can send a remittance through those arrangements or what a particular route costs. Treat completed pilots separately from announced plans, and ask the service provider for corridor-specific availability and an all-in quote.

Ripple Payments: a managed service with country-specific availability

Ripple’s current product page describes a managed service that can settle in fiat or stablecoins. Ripple reports first- and third-party payouts across 60+ markets, more than $100 billion in payment volume, and 85+ global licenses. These are company-reported figures; the page says availability may vary by Ripple entity. They do not mean every feature or payout option is available in every country.

A separate Ripple article on crypto remittances says migrants sent approximately $685 billion to low- and middle-income countries in 2024, attributing the figure to KNOMAD, and says remittance fees can exceed 6%. These are broad contextual figures, not a quote for a specific route. The article also reports $27.6 trillion in stablecoin transfer volume in 2024, citing the World Economic Forum; that figure is not remittance volume.

Ethereum is not one fixed-cost baseline

“Ethereum” can mean mainnet or a layer 2, and their fees can differ substantially. A 2026 arXiv preprint studying Ethereum mainnet and layer 2 costs and speed from January 2024 through March 2026, alongside Solana and Polygon, reports that median mainnet fees fell from above $2 to below $0.02 and layer 2 median fees fell from $0.05 to $0.0015. These are preprint findings over a stated measurement window, not live transaction quotes or like-for-like cross-border remittance costs. They illustrate why a comparison should identify the specific Ethereum network and route rather than treating Ethereum fees as constant.

How to find the lowest-cost option for your transfer

  1. Define the route: write down the sending and receiving countries, amount, sending currency, desired recipient currency, and whether the recipient needs bank deposit, cash pickup, wallet funds or another payout.
  2. Choose a funding method: specify how the sender will pay, such as a bank transfer or card, since funding charges and processing can change the result.
  3. Check asset and service access: confirm that both ends support the exact stablecoin, blockchain network, provider and payout method. Do not assume a wallet or ramp supports every token on every network.
  4. Request same-day, like-for-like quotes: compare the total debit for the sender with the final amount the recipient will receive. Ask each provider to disclose fees and FX conversion or spread, including withdrawal and cash-out charges.
  5. Compare practical risks and timing: check payout availability, expected completion time, custody, compliance requirements, stablecoin redemption arrangements, customer support and how failed or misdirected payments are handled.

The World Bank’s 2026 Payment Systems overview says remittances are three times larger than official development assistance and at least 3% of GDP in more than 60 countries. That scale helps explain why cost matters, but it does not identify the cheapest provider for an individual corridor.
