If your reading is almost entirely text-only novels, a monochrome Kindle is likely enough. Kindle Colorsoft remains an e-ink reader, not a tablet replacement.
What is Kindle Colorsoft’s color screen best for?
Color is most useful when it preserves information or visual detail that would otherwise disappear into shades of gray. Amazon describes Colorsoft as designed for reading and names comics, graphic novels, photos, and images as uses for its color display. Amazon UK also points to travel guides. Those are product use cases, not evidence that every ebook looks better in color.
- Comics and graphic novels: Color preserves palettes and distinctions between visual elements that monochrome screens cannot show.
- Illustrated books and photographs: Color helps images retain their original visual character, particularly in books where pictures are part of the experience.
- Travel guides and maps: Color can make visual categories and map details easier to distinguish when the book uses them.
- Library browsing and annotation: Color book covers appear in the library and store. Colorsoft also offers yellow, orange, blue, and pink highlights that can be filtered. Its Page Color feature reverses black text and white backgrounds for readers who prefer a dark page.
Amazon’s product announcement describes the 7-inch Colorsoft display as designed for reading, “with none of the harsh glare or intense light of a conventional backlit screen.” That is Amazon’s design rationale, not an independent comparative test or a medical finding about eye comfort.
When is a monochrome e-reader the better choice?
If most of your reading is plain-text fiction or nonfiction, color may add little to your day-to-day experience. TechRadar’s 2026 buying guide recommends that readers who do not care about color consider another model; that is an editorial judgment, not a universal test result. Compare the actual price difference and, if crisp black-and-white text is your priority, try a monochrome screen in person.
#1 Best Overall
- Read in color – The 7" Colorsoft display is high-contrast and easy on the eyes, with paper-like color that brings covers and content to life.
- A brand-new experience – The Kindle Colorsoft display is optimized for reading in color and is different from the Kindle Paperwhite display, which is optimized for black and white reading.
- Color your pages – Highlight your favorite scenes in yellow, orange, blue, and pink.
- Marathon reading – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 8 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
TechRadar praised the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite’s sharp 7-inch Carta 1300 screen. That review refers to that generation and should not be treated as a confirmed specification for every later Paperwhite. Color can also be useful without being decisive: if you occasionally open an illustrated book but mostly read text, the frequency and value of that color use matter more than the feature list alone.
How to decide which Kindle suits your reading
- List the material you read regularly. If comics, graphic novels, illustrated books, photos, or maps are a frequent part of your reading, Colorsoft has a clearer practical advantage. If not, start by considering monochrome.
- Prioritize the screen experience you value. Readers focused on black-and-white text should compare a monochrome Kindle directly rather than assuming color is an upgrade in every respect.
- Match features to where and how you read. Amazon UK lists both Paperwhite and Colorsoft among waterproof Kindle models. Check the exact model’s current manufacturer specifications before buying, especially if water resistance matters.
- Decide whether the higher configuration earns its cost. Amazon’s 2025 announcement said Colorsoft Signature Edition added an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32GB storage, compared with 16GB on the standard model then announced. Configurations can change, so confirm the refreshed model’s features before choosing.
- Compare current prices and availability in your market. The Colorsoft range has changed since its original launch; historical launch prices are not current offers.
- Consider another color-reader ecosystem only if it fits your needs. TechRadar names Kobo Libra Colour as an alternative and notes its 32GB storage and writing features. Those points are not a full ecosystem comparison; consider them only if Kobo’s options are relevant to you.
What do Colorsoft prices and model details look like in 2026?
Prices below come from announcements and reporting for different dates and markets, so they should not be treated as directly comparable current offers. For the US refresh, Tom’s Guide reported preorder prices on October 3, 2026; it said shipments would begin October 28, 2026, a date still in the future as of October 3. Check Amazon for final specifications, live pricing, bundles, and availability.

What should you make of Amazon’s reading-time statistic?
Amazon said that in 2024, children who read graphic novels and comics spent 46% more total reading time than the average Kindle Kids reader. That is a company-reported comparison group, not evidence that Colorsoft causes children to read more, and it should not be generalized to adults.
Are reports of Colorsoft screen discoloration a reason to avoid it?
TechRadar’s 2026 guide says some users complained of screen discoloration when the first Colorsoft launched in 2024 and reports that its reviewer later assessed the device favorably. That historical reporting does not establish that all current units have the issue or that it remains a widespread defect. For a current purchase, assess the specific model and seller’s return terms rather than assuming the early reports describe every generation.

Is color worth paying for?
Ask Amazon UK’s practical question: “Do you prefer comic books to classic novels?” If color-dependent content is a regular part of your reading, Colorsoft’s display can serve a real purpose. If you mainly read text, monochrome is a sensible place to start; the answer depends on what you read, not on color being inherently better.
