The ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 is a notebook graphics processor introduced in February 2004 as ATI’s M11. Despite its name, it is a mobile RV360/Radeon 9600 XT derivative—not a mobile version of the desktop Radeon 9700. Its clock speeds, memory configuration, and cooling depended on the laptop maker, so the exact notebook model matters when identifying its performance or drivers.

What the Mobility Radeon 9700 is

ATI introduced the M11 in February 2004 for notebook gaming built around DirectX 9 and Shader Model 2.0. It used an AGP 8x design and belonged to the RV360 family. Contemporary coverage described it as related to the desktop Radeon 9600 XT, not the Radeon 9700. AnandTech’s February 2004 launch coverage identifies the M11 lineage and the range of configurations ATI gave notebook customers.

The naming is easy to misread: the desktop Radeon 9700 came from the R300 lineage, a different GPU family. The shared “9700” name does not mean the notebook part has desktop Radeon 9700 architecture or performance. Hardware.fr’s contemporary account also identifies the M11 as an RV360 mobile part.

Specifications and OEM variations

There was no single universal Mobility Radeon 9700 clock configuration. AnandTech reported ATI guidance allowing notebook makers to implement core clocks from 390 to 450 MHz and memory clocks from 200 to 260 MHz. Those are implementation ranges, not guaranteed specifications for every laptop.

Specification What is established
ATI designation M11
GPU family Mobile RV360, related to the Radeon 9600 XT; not the desktop R300 Radeon 9700
Core clock 390–450 MHz range reported as ATI customer implementation guidance by AnandTech in 2004
Memory clock 200–260 MHz range reported as ATI customer implementation guidance by AnandTech in 2004
Reference core clock 450 MHz, as listed by Notebookcheck; individual laptop implementations could differ
Memory bus configurations 64-bit or 128-bit, as listed by Notebookcheck; check the exact laptop
Memory capacity Varied by laptop; no universal capacity is established
API and shader support DirectX 9 and Shader Model 2.0
Interface AGP 8x design
Pixel pipelines and vertex shaders Common reference listings report four pixel pipelines and two vertex shaders; verify against the specific implementation

Notebookcheck’s specification listing gives the 450 MHz reference core and 64-/128-bit memory configurations. The 390–450 MHz core and 200–260 MHz memory ranges above come from ATI customer guidance reported by AnandTech, rather than a fixed specification applying to all notebooks.

Why the laptop model matters

ATI’s broad implementation range meant laptop makers determined important details, including clock speeds, memory capacity and bus width, and cooling. Those differences affect how a system performs and behaves thermally; a GPU name alone cannot establish a particular laptop’s exact configuration.

At launch, ATI named Acer, Gericom, Alienware, Voodoo PC, Medion, RockDirect, Packard-Bell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Samsung, LG, Targa, Wistron, Clevo, ECS, FIC, Quanta, Compal, Uniwill, and Asus among notebook partners. The partner list does not establish that every model from those brands used the GPU. To identify a system, use its full model or chassis designation and consult that model’s specifications or service documentation before relying on a clock, memory figure, or benchmark.

Driver availability today

Mobility Radeon 9700 drivers are part of AMD’s legacy software history, not current Windows 10 or Windows 11 support. AMD’s Catalyst 7.2 release notes listed the GPU in a Vista-only Mobility product support table. Catalyst 7.2 release notes document that historical Vista listing.

AMD’s Radeon 9700 legacy download page lists Catalyst revision 6.2, released on 2006-02-09. That listing does not establish support for modern Windows versions. For Linux, AMD’s historical proprietary-driver notes describe an environment based on glibc 2.2/2.3, Linux kernel 2.4, and XFree86 4.1–4.3; they should not be read as evidence of current Linux support. See the legacy Linux release notes.

If you need a driver for an original laptop, first identify the exact laptop model and operating system. The GPU’s legacy download listing alone does not confirm that a package will install on a particular notebook, whose original vendor package may also have depended on its configuration.
