To take a break, choose deactivation; to remove an account, choose deletion. In both services, the controls are in account-management settings, but deletion is not immediate: Meta describes a cancellation period and a longer content-removal process. Export anything you want to keep and check connected services before confirming deletion.
Deactivation or deletion: which should you choose?
Deactivation is the temporary choice. Meta says a deactivated Facebook account can be reactivated, and deactivation does not delete its photos, posts, or videos. Some information, including messages you have already sent, may still be visible to other people.
Deletion is intended to be permanent after the applicable cancellation period. Facebook deletion can end use of Messenger through that account and Facebook Login access to other apps; messages already sent may remain in recipients’ inboxes. Instagram deletion removes the account’s profile and associated photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers.

Before deleting: save data and check access
- Export what you want to keep. Facebook recommends downloading a copy of your information, such as photos and posts. Instagram recommends exporting account information before deletion because the export tool will no longer be available afterward.
- Check Facebook Login dependencies. If you use Facebook to sign in to another app or website, arrange another sign-in method or account recovery route first. You may need to contact that service if access is lost.
- Consider Messenger. Deleting Facebook can end Messenger use through that account. Deactivation may allow Messenger to remain usable.
- Check Meta Quest if you use it. Meta warns that deleting Facebook also removes Meta Quest information, including app purchases and achievements, and may affect returns and store credit.
- Remember sent messages. Deleting an account does not recall messages from other people’s inboxes.
How to deactivate or delete Facebook
Meta’s current Facebook Help Center route puts both actions in Accounts Center. Menu names can vary with device, app version, or account configuration.
- Open your Facebook profile menu and select Settings and privacy → Settings.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Select Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the account or profile you want to change.
- Choose Deactivate account for a temporary break, or Delete account to request permanent deletion, then continue through the confirmation steps.
If you cannot find deletion in Accounts Center, Meta also documents this alternative: Facebook Settings → Your Facebook information → Deactivation and deletion → Delete account. Follow the displayed confirmation steps. See Meta’s instructions for permanently deleting a Facebook account.

How to deactivate or delete Instagram
Instagram’s help instructions place these options in account-management settings. The official help result used here is localized in Romanian, so the route below is a translated paraphrase rather than an English-page quotation; labels may differ by app version or device.
- Open Instagram’s account-management settings and go to Personal details → Account options → Deactivation or deletion.
- Choose the Instagram account you want to manage.
- Select Deactivate account for a temporary break, or Delete account for permanent deletion.
- If deleting, export information you want to keep before continuing, then complete the confirmation steps.
Meta’s Instagram account deletion and deactivation instructions describe deletion of the profile, photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers, and direct users who want a break to temporary deactivation.

What happens after you request deletion?
Facebook’s cancellation and removal periods
Meta says Facebook deletion can generally be cancelled by logging in within 30 days, but the cancellation period may vary by region. Once that period has passed, Meta says the account and information are permanently deleted and cannot be retrieved.
Meta also says removing all posted content may take up to 90 days from the start of deletion. During processing, the information is not accessible to other Facebook users. Backup copies may remain after 90 days for recovery from disaster, software error, or other data loss, and Meta may retain information for legal issues, terms violations, or harm prevention. This describes Meta’s stated process; it is not a promise that every copy disappears from every system on a single date.

Instagram’s cancellation period
Meta’s Instagram help page describes a 30-day period before permanent deletion. During that period, the content is not accessible to other Instagram users, and the number of days in which deletion can be cancelled may vary by region. Check the confirmation screen and applicable local terms when making the request.
