A crypto remittance can involve more than a blockchain fee: the sender may pay to acquire or convert the asset, the recipient may pay to cash out, and a network confirmation does not mean usable money has arrived. There is no universal crypto-remittance price or delivery time; both depend on the route, providers, asset, and payout method. Tax treatment also depends on where you live and what you do with the crypto.
How much does a crypto remittance cost?
Compare the sender’s total spend with the amount the recipient can actually use—not just the network fee or a provider’s advertised charge. Costs can arise at several points:
| Cost stage | What to check |
|---|---|
| Funding or purchase | Any charge to fund an account or buy the crypto being sent. |
| Conversion | The exchange rate and any spread when converting between local currency and crypto, or between crypto assets. |
| Network transfer | The fee for sending on the selected blockchain; it may vary with network conditions. |
| Provider processing | Any remittance, exchange, or service charge, plus possible compliance-review delays or requirements. |
| Recipient payout | Charges and exchange-rate costs to sell or redeem the asset, then withdraw to a bank, mobile-money account, or cash pickup where supported. |
For context, the IRS’s 2026 Internal Revenue Bulletin reports World Bank averages for conventional remittances sent from the United States in 2025: 5.56% of a $200 transfer and 3.81% of a $500 transfer. These are not crypto fees, not a quote for any specific corridor, and not a like-for-like comparison with a particular service. The bulletin notes conventional-remittance fees can vary by provider, transfer size, payment method, corridor, and speed.
No current crypto-specific price comparison for a named provider and route is established here. To compare options, use the same origin, destination, amount, funding method, and payout method, and ask each provider for the recipient’s net proceeds after exchange rates and all charges.

How long does a crypto transfer take?
There is no single useful duration for the whole remittance. A blockchain confirmation covers only the network leg; it does not show when the recipient can spend or withdraw the funds. The route may include:
- Network confirmation or settlement.
- Provider processing, including identity or compliance review where required.
- Conversion into the recipient’s local currency, if needed.
- Delivery through the destination payout rail, such as a bank or mobile-money service.
Timing can depend on the asset and network, provider, route, compliance checks, banking hours or cutoffs, and payout method. A live estimate for a particular provider and corridor is not established here. Check the provider’s current estimate for the exact amount, funding source, destination, and payout option, and distinguish its network status from the time funds become usable.

Do I have to pay tax when I send crypto to someone?
It depends on your jurisdiction and the transaction. Sending crypto to another person is not automatically the same as moving it between your own wallets, and the word “send” alone does not settle the tax result. For U.S. federal income tax, the IRS treats digital assets as property. Selling crypto for dollars or exchanging it for another asset or property can be a taxable disposition that results in a capital gain or loss, subject to applicable rules and limitations.
For a U.S. federal disposition, gain or loss generally depends on adjusted basis and amount realized. The IRS describes amount realized as cash received plus the fair market value of services received, reduced by digital-asset transaction costs allocable to the disposition. The nature of a transfer to another person and what, if anything, was exchanged or disposed of matter; do not assume every person-to-person transfer is either taxable or tax-free.

These are U.S. federal tax points, not a determination of tax owed in your circumstances. Other countries may apply different rules. Keep transaction dates, asset units, basis, fair-market values, proceeds, and fees, and consult current local guidance or a qualified tax professional if the treatment is unclear.
Is sending crypto to my own wallet taxable?
For U.S. federal purposes, an ordinary transfer between wallets or accounts belonging to the same taxpayer is generally not taxable. IRS digital-asset FAQ 81 makes an exception for digital assets used or withheld to pay transaction services that effect the transfer. A network or service fee paid in crypto therefore deserves separate recordkeeping from the movement of the remaining balance.

This treatment concerns a transfer between accounts that belong to the same taxpayer; it should not be extended automatically to a sale, exchange, payment to another person, or a transfer where ownership changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the U.S. remittance tax apply to cryptocurrency?
Do not treat the U.S. 1% remittance transfer tax as a blanket tax on all crypto transfers—or assume every crypto-funded transfer is exempt. IRS guidance describes a tax effective January 1, 2026, for covered transfers from the United States to a foreign recipient when the sender provides the remittance provider with cash, a money order, cashier’s check, traveler’s check, or a similar physical instrument. The sender is liable, and the provider generally collects and reports the tax.

The trigger described by the IRS is the specified funding instrument, not simply the fact that a transfer crosses a border. The stated scope does not establish that every electronic, bank-funded, or cryptocurrency arrangement is covered or exempt. For a particular transaction, check current IRS guidance and the provider’s explanation; the result can depend on the actual arrangement and instrument.
Are stablecoins a safe way to send money internationally?
A stablecoin can be used for a cross-border transfer, but its name does not guarantee stable value, redemption, universal acceptance, or a low-cost payout. Before sending, confirm that the recipient can receive the exact asset on the exact network and can access a supported conversion or payout route. Check issuer and redemption terms, exchange availability, provider charges, and local legal requirements.
Operational and compliance risks also matter. FATF’s international standards are implemented by countries through rules adapted to local circumstances; they are not a complete statement of any one country’s law. FATF has highlighted risks associated with peer-to-peer activity through unhosted wallets and cross-chain stablecoin activity. A transfer that bypasses a regulated intermediary may have different controls or recourse than a provider-mediated payment. Verify the applicable requirements for both ends of the route rather than treating a wallet address as a complete remittance service.
Quick Recap
What should I check before sending?
- Confirm the recipient address, asset, and network; a mismatch can prevent the recipient from accessing the funds.
- Calculate the recipient’s expected net amount after purchase costs, spread, network charges, provider fees, and cash-out or payout charges.
- Check the provider’s current route availability, identity requirements, timing estimate, and process for delayed or misdirected transfers.
- For a stablecoin, verify issuer and redemption terms, chain compatibility, and a practical local cash-out or spending option.
- Save transaction records needed for tax reporting, including dates, units, basis, fair-market values, proceeds, and fees.
- Check tax and transfer rules in both the sending and receiving jurisdictions; U.S. federal guidance does not resolve destination-country treatment.
