Start with Windows 11’s built-in Volume mixer if you want to adjust or mute apps and manage your system’s output device. Consider EarTrumpet if you want a separate mixer interface, configurable hotkeys, or a documented way to move apps between playback devices. The choice is mainly about workflow: neither the available documentation nor the feature lists establish that one is faster, more reliable, or better sounding.
What each mixer is for
Windows 11’s Volume mixer is part of the operating system’s sound controls. It is a practical starting point for inspecting volume and mute settings, while the broader Sound settings let you choose the default output device. EarTrumpet is a separate mixer utility whose project documentation lists app-volume controls and additional playback-device workflows.
These tools overlap, but they are not identical in purpose. Adjusting an app’s level is different from changing the system-wide default output; sending one app to another device is a more specific routing task.
How to change one app’s volume in Windows 11
- Open the sound flyout from the taskbar by selecting the speaker icon.
- Choose the Volume mixer or mixer/settings control shown there. The exact label or placement can vary by Windows build.
- Inspect the available device and app controls, then adjust a volume slider or unmute a control as needed.

How to select the system’s default output device
Use Settings > System > Sound to select an output device and make it the default. This is a system-level choice, not the same as changing an individual app’s volume. Microsoft documents both the mixer entry point and the default-device route in its Windows audio troubleshooting guidance.
What EarTrumpet adds
EarTrumpet’s official project documentation lists a standalone volume mixer, moving apps between playback devices, default playback-device management, configurable hotkeys, modern context menus, and automatic updates through the Microsoft Store. Those features may suit someone who changes app routing often or prefers a separate mixer interface; they are documented features, not an independent performance comparison.

Which one should you choose?
Use the built-in mixer for routine adjustments
Stay with Windows controls if you mainly need to lower or unmute an app, check the available mixer controls, or select the system’s default output. It is already part of Windows, and Microsoft documents a direct route from the taskbar sound flyout.

Try EarTrumpet for a separate interface or app routing
EarTrumpet is worth considering if its documented features match your routine—particularly moving an app between playback devices, managing the default playback device from the utility, or using configurable hotkeys. Whether that workflow feels better depends on your preferences and setup; the project feature list does not establish fewer clicks or lower resource use.
