To highlight a cursor or show where a click happened, use a recorder and editor that captures cursor data or provides cursor effects, then apply the treatment and review it in the exported video. Camtasia documents editable cursor effects on Windows and Mac; Screen Studio lists cursor and click effects for macOS. With OBS, the official feature list describes capture and extensibility, but not built-in cursor-highlight or click-animation controls.
Choose a workflow that supports the effect you need
Cursor emphasis can be captured as editable mouse data or added as part of the recorded image, depending on the software. That distinction matters: editable data can let you change or remove an effect later, while an effect already baked into the image is not independently adjustable in the same way. Check the recorder and editor’s documentation for its specific workflow.
| Tool | Documented cursor features | Platform and workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Camtasia | Mouse movement and clicks can be recorded for editing; the editor documents cursor scaling, path editing, glow, and cursor-style changes. | TechSmith’s custom-cursor guide describes the workflow on Windows and Mac, with effects adjustable or removable later in the timeline. |
| Screen Studio | The official product page lists smooth cursor movement, click effects, and cursor-style editing. | The product page identifies Screen Studio as a macOS recorder. |
| OBS Studio | The official feature page describes capture, scenes, sources, and extensibility, but does not document built-in cursor highlighting or click animations. | Free, open-source, and cross-platform. Plugins, scripts, or external overlays may provide other options. |
These are vendor-documented capabilities, not a neutral comparison of ease of use, performance, or output quality. Cursor features can also vary by product version. For example, TechSmith’s Windows Camtasia 2025.0.0 release notes, dated 12 February 2025, list cursor motion blur, kinetic cursor, and cursor elevation; that release note should not be read as a feature list for every platform or version. See Camtasia Windows 2025 Version History.
How to add cursor highlighting and click effects
- Choose compatible software. Confirm that it supports your operating system and the effects you want. Camtasia documents mouse-data capture and cursor editing; Screen Studio lists cursor and click features for macOS. If you use OBS, plan for an extension or overlay if you need effects not documented as built-in.
- Record the screen and cursor movement. In Camtasia, TechSmith’s custom-cursor guide starts with capturing the screen, including cursor movements. TechSmith also says Camtasia’s recording engine captures mouse data for editing. Follow the equivalent capture instructions for your chosen tool.
- Apply an effect in the editor. Use a persistent glow or highlight to make the pointer easier to follow, adjust its size or style if it is hard to see, and add a click animation when viewers need to identify the exact click location. Camtasia documents these types of cursor editing; Screen Studio lists click effects and cursor-style editing.
- Adjust and review the timeline. In Camtasia, TechSmith says cursor effects can be changed or removed later. Review whether the cursor stays visible over callouts and whether click indicators cover small controls. Keep effects restrained enough to clarify the action rather than distract from it.
- Inspect a short export at its final playback size. Check that the cursor and click indicators are visible and that they do not obscure interface details before rendering the full recording. This is a practical quality check, not a guarantee from the software vendors.
Which effect should you use?
- Highlight or glow: Helps viewers keep track of the pointer as it moves across a busy screen.
- Cursor scaling or a different style: Makes a small or low-contrast pointer easier to spot.
- Click animation: Draws attention to the location and timing of an interaction, which is useful when a control is small or the action happens quickly.
- Path treatment or motion effect: Can make cursor movement easier to follow, but use it only when it supports the explanation. TechSmith’s Windows Camtasia 2025.0.0 notes, for instance, list motion blur, kinetic cursor, and cursor elevation for that release.
What to expect from each workflow
Camtasia: editable cursor data and effects
TechSmith says Camtasia can record mouse movement, cursor clicks, and keystrokes for editing, and its editor includes cursor scaling, path editing, glow, and cursor-style changes. Its custom cursor guide outlines a basic process: capture the screen with cursor movements, select an effect, then adjust its settings. TechSmith says the effects work on Windows and Mac and can be changed or removed later in the timeline.

Screen Studio: cursor and click features in a macOS recorder
Screen Studio’s official product page lists smooth cursor movement, click effects, and cursor-style editing, and identifies the software as a macOS recorder. Consult the current product documentation for the precise controls and availability in your installed version.
OBS Studio: capture with extensibility
OBS is a free, open-source, cross-platform tool for video recording and live streaming. Its official features page describes capture, scenes, sources, and support for plugins and scripts; it does not describe a built-in cursor-highlighting or click-animation workflow. That does not rule out extensions or external overlays, but those are separate from the built-in features documented on the page.

Common problems to check
- The cursor is missing: Check the recording settings and confirm that the tool captures cursor movement or mouse data. A visible pointer in the recording and separately editable cursor data are not necessarily the same thing.
- The effect cannot be changed afterward: Confirm before recording whether your workflow preserves cursor data for editing or burns the effect into the image. Editable effects are product- and workflow-dependent.
- A click indicator hides the target: Reduce its size or intensity, reposition the action in the edit if appropriate, or choose a less intrusive treatment.
- The instructions do not match your software: Check the product version and operating system. TechSmith’s cited motion-effect examples are specifically from the Windows Camtasia 2025.0.0 release notes, not a universal list for every Camtasia edition.
