You can send money internationally using crypto by funding a service or wallet, transferring an asset, and arranging for the recipient to convert or use it. But the blockchain transfer is only one part of the remittance: compare the full cost and confirm the recipient can actually access the funds before you send.
How a crypto remittance works
A crypto remittance is a chain of steps, not necessarily a single transfer. Depending on the arrangement, the sender may pay in local currency, buy a crypto asset, send it over a blockchain, and have the recipient convert it or withdraw it through a local service. Different businesses may handle the funding and payout stages, and some arrangements may not include a cash-out option at all.
A stablecoin is designed to maintain a value relationship with another asset, often a currency, but that design is not a guarantee of stable value or redemption. Before relying on one, check the issuer’s current terms, the recipient’s ability to redeem or exchange it, and the rules that apply in both countries.
Steps to send money with crypto
- Define the transfer. Identify the sending and receiving countries, the amount, and how the recipient needs the money: a bank deposit, cash pickup, balance in a supported wallet, or crypto they can hold or spend. Check that the intended service and payout route are available to both of you, including any identity or eligibility requirements.
- Get a complete quote. Record the amount you will pay, the exchange rate, all fees, expected delivery or availability time, and the amount the recipient should be able to access after conversion or withdrawal. Compare quotes for the same amount, corridor, and payout method.
- Check the provider and route. Confirm the provider’s legal entity, availability in both countries, supported asset and network, recipient payout method, current terms, and complaint process. A route is not useful if the recipient cannot receive, convert, withdraw, or spend the asset.
- Confirm the receiving details before sending. For a wallet transfer, use the recipient’s current receiving instructions and verify that the selected asset and network are accepted. Do not assume that a transfer to an incorrect address or incompatible network can be reversed or recovered.
- Send and retain the records. Keep the quote, transaction reference, recipient details, and provider contact information. Follow the provider’s current instructions if a transfer is delayed, an amount differs from the quote, or the recipient cannot access the funds.
How to compare the real cost
The network charge is only one possible cost. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), in Circular 2024-02, identifies provider and third-party fees, government taxes, and currency-conversion costs reflected in the offered exchange rate as relevant cost components. A displayed “no fee” does not establish that a transfer is free if the rate is less favorable or conversion and withdrawal charges apply.

| What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Sender’s total debit | The amount charged to you, including funding, purchase, transfer, and applicable tax or other charges. |
| Exchange rate and spread | The offered rate and, where available, how it compares with a reference rate at the time of the quote. A rate difference can be a cost even when a separate fee is advertised as zero. |
| Network and service charges | Any blockchain network charge, provider fee, or charge from an agent or other third party. |
| Recipient’s net proceeds | The amount the recipient can actually access after conversion, withdrawal, payout, or cash-out charges, in the currency or asset they can use. |
| Availability and access | The estimated time funds will be available to the recipient, plus whether the recipient can use the selected wallet, asset, and payout route. |
| Recourse and provider terms | Applicable cancellation and error procedures, complaint channels, custody arrangements, and the provider’s status in the relevant jurisdictions. |
Compare the recipient’s net proceeds and expected availability, not just the sender-facing fee or the time a blockchain transaction takes to settle. The CFPB warns that remittance marketing claims about cost or speed may be deceptive when they mislead consumers. Its Circular 2024-02 states: “Remittance transfer providers may be liable under the CFPA for deceptive marketing about the speed or cost of sending a remittance transfer.”
Risks to check before sending
Recipient may not be able to cash out
Receiving a token does not ensure the recipient can exchange it for local currency, withdraw it to a bank, or spend it. That depends on available services, local payment infrastructure, and the recipient’s access to them. Stablecoin arrangements can rely on separate businesses for on- and off-ramps.

Value, redemption, and custody are not assured
Do not infer a particular token’s reserves, peg, redemption rights, or treatment if an issuer or service provider fails from the label “stablecoin.” Check current issuer documentation and jurisdiction-specific terms. The value of a crypto asset and the recipient’s ability to redeem it are separate questions.
Transfers, fraud, and service errors
Do not assume a wallet transfer has the same cancellation or error-resolution process as a covered remittance service. Confirm the provider’s current terms and contact details before sending, and treat unexpected payment instructions or requests to redirect funds as a reason to pause and verify independently.

Rules and service access vary by country
Legal obligations depend on the countries involved and on what role each business performs. FinCEN’s 2013 virtual-currency guidance distinguishes users from exchangers, administrators, and money transmitters under its framework; that distinction is not a legal conclusion for every service or corridor. FATF has also identified financial-integrity concerns involving peer-to-peer transactions through unhosted wallets and cross-chain stablecoin activity. These risks can affect controls or service access, but they do not mean every wallet user is engaged in illicit activity.
U.S. remittance rights: when they may apply
The CFPB says federal remittance rules generally cover qualifying electronic transfers of more than $15 sent by U.S. consumers to people or businesses abroad through a remittance-transfer provider. For covered transfers, the rules include disclosures about fees and taxes, exchange rates, certain agent or third-party fees, the amount expected to be delivered, and when funds are expected to be available.

The CFPB’s consumer guidance describes a general right to cancel within 30 minutes, unless the funds have already been picked up or deposited, and 180 days from the disclosed availability date to report an error. Provider exceptions and scope conditions apply. Do not assume a crypto exchange, wallet, peer-to-peer payment, or blockchain transfer is covered just because it helps move money internationally; coverage depends on the actual parties, service, and transaction meeting the legal definitions.

An IMF policy paper published in 2023 cites Beck, Janfils, and Kpodar (2022) for an average fee of 5.7% on a $200 remittance in 2020, with cited 75th and 25th percentiles of 7.7% and 4%. Those are historical figures for remittances generally, not a current crypto price or a quote for a particular corridor. They cannot tell you what your recipient will receive today; use current, same-corridor quotes to make that decision.
