Kioxia’s XD8 is an enterprise E1.S data-center SSD family built for cloud and hyperscale platforms. Kioxia rates its top sequential-read performance at up to 12,500 MB/s (12.5 GB/s), but that is a sustained 128 KiB workload figure—not a promise of the same speed in every server or application. XD8 uses PCIe 5.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0, and it requires an E1.S-compatible platform rather than a standard M.2 slot.

What is the Kioxia XD8?

Announced by Kioxia on 15 October 2024, the XD8 Series is the company’s third generation of E1.S enterprise and data-center SSDs. It is designed for cloud and hyperscale deployments and supports the Open Compute Project (OCP) Datacenter NVMe SSD specification v2.5.

XD8 is not a conventional desktop or laptop SSD. Its E1.S form factor is intended for compatible enterprise server bays and backplanes, in either 9.5 mm or 15 mm thickness. A standard M.2 slot or 2.5-inch SATA bay is not a direct fit.

How fast is the XD8?

Kioxia’s published specifications give these maximum sustained figures. Sequential results are for 128 KiB transfers; random results are for 4 KiB transfers.

Sequential write Up to 5,800 MB/s
Random read Up to 2,300K IOPS
Random write Up to 250K IOPS

These are vendor maximums, not independent benchmark results or guaranteed application speeds. Actual performance depends on the server, workload, configuration and operating conditions. Kioxia lists a 1 DWPD endurance rating; the applicable capacity and warranty terms should be confirmed in the product documentation for the specific drive.

What capacities and variants are available?

Kioxia lists three capacities and two E1.S thicknesses. It also lists a self-encrypting-drive (SED) option, alongside power-loss protection and end-to-end data protection. Confirm the exact part number and feature combination with the supplier before ordering.

Capacity Approximate decimal capacity Form factor choices
1,920 GB 1.92 TB E1.S, 9.5 mm or 15 mm
3,840 GB 3.84 TB E1.S, 9.5 mm or 15 mm
7,680 GB 7.68 TB E1.S, 9.5 mm or 15 mm

Will an XD8 SSD work in your server?

Compatibility depends on the complete platform, not just the PCIe generation. Before buying, check the server or storage enclosure documentation and verify:

  • Drive bay and thickness: The system must accept E1.S drives and the selected 9.5 mm or 15 mm variant.
  • Backplane and link: Confirm an appropriate E1.S backplane or adapter and PCIe 5.0 x4 support. A physical adapter alone does not guarantee electrical, firmware or thermal compatibility.
  • Firmware and qualification: Check the server vendor’s supported-drive list and confirm that the exact XD8 model and firmware are accepted.
  • Power and cooling: Verify the bay’s power delivery and airflow are suitable for the drive and the server’s expected workload.
  • Security and data-protection needs: Select the right SED variant if encryption is required, and confirm the platform supports the relevant management and security features.

XD8’s PCIe 5.0, NVMe 2.0 and OCP Datacenter NVMe v2.5 support make it a fit for modern data-center platforms built around those standards, but they do not establish compatibility with every server that has PCIe 5.0. Kioxia’s announcement quoted Microsoft Azure’s Pablo Ziperovich describing the value of PCIe 5.0, E1.S and OCP compliance for Microsoft data centers; that statement is not a compatibility list for other systems.

Where can you buy a Kioxia XD8?

The available product information does not establish live stock, consumer pricing or an authorized marketplace seller. For a purchase, contact an enterprise storage distributor or server supplier and request a quote for the exact capacity, thickness, SED status and firmware. Confirm the seller’s authorization and the drive’s compatibility with your platform before ordering.

How to compare XD8 with another data-center SSD

Compare drives against the workload and server configuration rather than headline bandwidth alone. Useful criteria include:

Rank #4
KIOXIA CM7-R Series KCMYXRUG15T3 - SSD - Enterprise Read Intensive - 15360 GB - PCI Express 5.0 (NVMe)
  • Data transfer rate: 40.0 gigabits_per_second
  • Item dimensions: 8.75 inches
  • Interface generation and lane configuration, such as PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 x4.
  • Form factor, thickness and backplane support.
  • Sequential and random performance under the workload sizes that matter to your application.
  • Capacity, endurance rating, power requirements and thermal limits.
  • Encryption and data-protection features.
  • NVMe and OCP compliance, as well as availability on the platform vendor’s qualified-drive list.

Use vendor “up to” specifications as comparison ceilings; application-level performance requires results from a representative system and workload.
