In most cases, you can’t roll an iPhone back to its previous iOS version through Apple’s normal restore process. Finder on Mac and Apple Devices on PC erase the iPhone and install the latest iOS—not an older version you choose. A downgrade is possible only while Apple still authorizes a compatible earlier build for your exact iPhone model.
Can you go back to a previous iOS version?
Only in limited circumstances. Apple’s standard computer restore is not a downgrade tool: Apple says, “Your computer erases your device and installs the latest iOS, iPadOS, or iPod software.” Apple’s restore instructions describe a way to reinstall current software, not select an earlier release.

To install an older iOS build, Apple must still authorize that build for your specific iPhone. This authorization is checked online and can stop after Apple releases newer software; having an older firmware file does not, by itself, make installation possible. MacRumors reported on September 21, 2026, that Apple had stopped signing iOS 26.6.2, preventing a return to that version from iOS 27 at that time. That is a dated example, not a guarantee about what is installable now or on every iPhone. Check current authorization for your exact model and target build immediately before attempting a downgrade.
Decide whether you need a downgrade or a repair
If the update installed successfully but you dislike the newer iOS, the only potential rollback route depends on Apple authorizing an earlier compatible build. If the update failed or the iPhone is having trouble starting, Apple’s recovery and restore steps may help reinstall the latest iOS—but they do not provide a general way to go back to an older release.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple warns that downgrade attempts can produce errors such as error 1015 or a message that a required resource cannot be found. Its iOS update and restore error guidance is for troubleshooting Apple restore workflows, not a supported workaround for installing an unauthorized build.
Back up and check compatibility before erasing
Any computer restore erases information and settings on the iPhone. Before proceeding, make a current backup and confirm that you can access it. Apple’s computer restore guidance also says to turn off Find My before restoring. The restore process does not delete the iPhone’s eSIM, according to that guidance.

A backup and an iOS installer do different jobs: a backup brings back supported content and settings, while the restore process installs iOS. A backup made on a newer release may not work on an iPhone running an older one. Apple says an iCloud backup may require newer iOS, and a computer may show an error if the backup needs newer software. See Apple’s guidance for restoring an iPhone that needs a newer iOS version and restoring from a backup.
- Make a backup before erasing, and check that it completed.
- Consider whether you need data created after your most recent older backup; that backup may not include it.
- Confirm that the backup can be restored to the iOS version you plan to use.
- Check Apple’s current authorization for the target build and your exact iPhone model before starting.
Use Apple’s restore tools for a standard restore
If you intend to erase the iPhone and reinstall the latest iOS, use Apple’s instructions for restoring with a computer. The standard tools are Finder on a Mac and Apple Devices on a PC; iTunes applies in supported older environments. If an update or restore failure requires recovery mode, follow Apple’s recovery instructions for reinstalling the latest software. Recovery mode is not a version picker.

Do not treat unofficial firmware downloads, jailbreak utilities, or bypasses as ordinary downgrade steps. The Apple guidance cited here supports Apple’s own restore workflow and does not establish a safe, supported method to install an older build Apple no longer authorizes.

If a restore fails with a USB or connection error, Apple recommends checking the connection and computer, trying another USB port, and using the supplied cable or another Apple-certified USB cable when appropriate. Follow Apple’s restore-error troubleshooting steps. Check which connector your iPhone uses before replacing a cable; buying one is not a prerequisite for a restore unless your existing cable is missing or causing a connection problem.
