Fetch and Freight are autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) built to move materials through warehouses and other facilities. They can support picking by transporting goods between work areas, while people carry out task-specific work and oversee operations. The Fetch and Freight Research Edition is no longer sold or supported by Zebra Technologies as of 2024; it should not be confused with Zebra’s later enterprise Fetch AMR portfolio.
What are Fetch and Freight robots?
Fetch Robotics developed intralogistics automation systems for fulfillment and distribution centers, manufacturing, and general material movement. Its AMRs were designed to carry out tasks such as optimized picking support and just-in-time delivery of materials. Rather than replacing every warehouse task, they automated movement within a broader workflow.
FetchCore, Fetch’s cloud-based platform, was intended to help deploy and integrate workflows and use data from robot sensors to provide facility insights. In practice, the value of an AMR system depends not just on the robot, but on how robot missions fit the facility’s processes and software.
How did Fetch AMRs automate warehouse picking?
In 2020, Fetch integrated its AMRs with Zebra FulfillmentEdge, a workflow orchestration solution for collaborative picking. The integration addressed piece, case, and pallet workflows, as well as recycling removal, reverse logistics, and restocking packing stations.

The intended division of work was straightforward: robots handled transport, while workers focused on picking and other task-specific work. That arrangement can reduce the amount of material workers need to move themselves, but it is not the same as an entirely worker-free warehouse. The robot movements have to be coordinated with warehouse tasks through the relevant software and facility workflows.
What did Zebra’s acquisition change?
Zebra Technologies announced its intent to acquire the 95% of Fetch Robotics it did not already own on July 1, 2021, for $290 million. Nasdaq records the acquisition as completed on August 10, 2021. At the time of the announcement, Zebra reported Fetch had approximately $10 million in annualized run-rate sales.

The acquisition brought Fetch into Zebra’s enterprise automation business. Zebra’s 2021 announcement framed the deal as a way to expand intelligent industrial automation and workflow capabilities. Fetch CEO Melonee Wise likewise described joining Zebra as a means to accelerate adoption of AMRs and the cloud-based robotics platform.

These figures provide context for Zebra’s case for automation, but they do not establish what a particular facility will achieve. Results depend on the workflows being automated and the conditions of a deployment; the cited releases do not provide independently verified outcomes for every warehouse.
Are Fetch and Freight robots still sold?
Zebra’s official documentation says the Fetch and Freight Research Edition robots were no longer supported or sold by Zebra as of 2024. These research platforms were ROS-based and had documentation for installation, safety, and development. Their discontinuation applies to the Research Edition; it does not establish that Zebra’s later enterprise Fetch AMR portfolio was discontinued.

Fetch Robotics became part of Zebra Technologies following the 2021 acquisition. Zebra’s later materials continued to present Fetch AMRs as part of its enterprise automation story, while the Research Edition documentation eventually recorded its discontinuation. Those are distinct developments: an end to support and sales for the research platforms is not, by itself, an announcement that all enterprise Fetch AMRs ended.

What should a warehouse assess before choosing an AMR?
A warehouse evaluating AMRs should compare systems against its own material flows and operating requirements. In particular, establish:
