Yes, the Xeon Platinum 8171M matches the Tyan Tempest EX S7100-EX’s LGA3647 socket and Xeon Scalable platform. That establishes platform compatibility, not confirmed support for every board revision or BIOS: the available TYAN specifications do not include a board-specific 8171M validation entry. Before buying, verify the board’s BIOS and revision with the seller. The S7100-EX is a dual-socket server/workstation board with 12 ECC registered DIMM slots, seven PCIe Gen3 slots, SATA and NVMe options, and onboard IPMI management.

| Maximum CPU TDP | 205 W, according to the TYAN S7100 manual/specification, version 1.0f |
The 1,536 GB maximum is the figure listed by Puget Systems on its page accessed in 2026. It describes a supported board configuration, not a guarantee that any arbitrary mix of DIMMs will work. TYAN’s documentation describes the socket, memory, and expansion architecture; the exact CPU and DIMM configuration still matters.
Will a Xeon Platinum 8171M work in the S7100-EX?
The Xeon Platinum 8171M belongs to the first-generation Xeon Scalable family and uses the LGA3647 platform class the S7100-EX is designed for. Its socket and processor family therefore match the board. However, the available TYAN specifications do not give a board-specific 8171M validation list. Socket fit alone cannot confirm that a particular used board will boot that CPU.
Before purchase, ask the seller to verify the exact PCB revision, installed BIOS revision, and CPU stepping support for the 8171M. Also establish whether the board is being sold with one or two processors. In a dual-socket build, use a compatible matched processor configuration and populate memory according to TYAN’s rules for the sockets in use.

#1 Best Overall
- Dual socket Xeon Scalable Processor
- 12 DIMM slots supporting up to 1.5TB DDR4 RAM
- 14 SATA 6G ports
- 2 NVMe M.2 ports (one 2280 + one 2242)
- 2 1000Base-T LAN ports
TYAN specifies a maximum supported CPU TDP of 205 W. Select a heatsink rated for LGA3647/Socket P and check that the case provides the airflow the heatsink expects; do not assume a desktop LGA3647 cooler has the right mounting hardware or cooling characteristics for this server board.
What RAM does the S7100-EX take?
Use DDR4 ECC registered server DIMMs, not ordinary desktop DDR4. TYAN lists support for RDIMM, RDIMM 3DS, LRDIMM, and LRDIMM 3DS. The board has six memory channels per CPU, so for best channel use, populate memory symmetrically across the installed processor sockets and follow the board’s documented population order.
Puget lists support up to 128 GB per slot and a maximum of 1,536 GB across 12 slots. Capacity and compatibility depend on the supported DIMM type, rank, and configuration; the maximum is not evidence that every 128 GB module or mixed DIMM arrangement is supported.
Puget’s specification table lists memory speeds up to 2933 MHz, but TYAN ties DDR4-2933 support to supported second-generation Xeon Scalable configurations and one DIMM per channel. The 8171M is first-generation, so choose memory speed based on that CPU’s supported configuration rather than expecting 2933 MT/s. Confirm DIMM voltage, rank, capacity, and population order against the manual before assembling a mixed or high-capacity set.

How many GPUs, cards, and NVMe drives can it run?
PCIe cards and GPUs
The S7100-EX has seven PCIe Gen3 slots—four listed as x16 and three as x8. Gen3 is the generation limit for these slots. The listed slot width does not necessarily mean every card will maintain that electrical width in every multi-card configuration: population can change link width. Check the board’s slot-population table before planning a GPU, accelerator, HBA, or high-speed NIC layout.
Physical fit and cooling are as important as slot count. Multiple GPUs or full-height adapters may obstruct adjacent slots, and server airflow and power delivery must suit the cards. The published specifications do not establish a universal number of GPUs that will fit or operate in every chassis and configuration.
NVMe and SATA storage
The two M.2 positions use PCIe interfaces for NVMe drives. Puget specifies one position for a 42 mm drive and the other for 42, 60, or 80 mm lengths. Match the SSD’s physical length to the specific position; do not assume both sockets accept a standard 80 mm stick.
MiTAC/TYAN warns that some M.2 SSDs designed after November 2020 may require a particular motherboard revision. If buying a newer NVMe drive for a used board, confirm revision compatibility rather than relying on connector fit alone.
For SATA storage, the board provides SATA 6 Gb/s and three Mini-SAS HD connectors. With correctly wired breakout cables, those headers can connect up to 12 additional SATA devices. A Mini-SAS HD connector does not by itself make the board a SAS controller: verify drive type and controller support, especially if you intend to attach SAS disks. The onboard Intel RSTe options listed are RAID 0, 1, 10, and 5.

- Heatsinks: use Socket P/LGA3647 heatsinks with the correct board mounting pattern. Check the intended chassis airflow direction and CPU TDP support.
- SATA breakout: for SATA drives on the three Mini-SAS HD headers, use correctly wired SFF-8643/Mini-SAS HD-to-SATA breakout cables. Confirm connector orientation and cable destination for the particular backplane or drives.
- CPU and auxiliary power: confirm the power supply has the CPU and auxiliary connectors required by the board and planned components; inspect the board manual and seller’s photos rather than assuming a standard desktop power setup is sufficient.
- Chassis: allow for an SSI EEB board measuring approximately 305 × 330 mm (12 × 13 in). Check mounting points and clearance before ordering a case.
- Socket hardware: confirm the LGA3647 socket hardware and CPU retention parts are present, especially when buying a bare or refurbished board.
Networking, display, and management
The two wired network ports are Gigabit Ethernet through the Intel I350-AM2; TYAN notes one port is shared with IPMI. The ASPEED AST2500 provides basic local VGA output up to 1920 × 1200, while the onboard BMC/IPMI design supports server management. These are useful headless-server features, not modern workstation connectivity: onboard Wi-Fi is not listed, and faster Ethernet requires an add-in PCIe adapter.
Is a used S7100-EX worth buying?
TYAN lists the S7100-EX as end-of-life, so availability is through used or refurbished sellers rather than a current production line. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the condition and completeness of the individual board, the cost of compatible server parts, and whether its older PCIe Gen3 and Gigabit networking capabilities meet the intended workload. The published specification sources do not establish a reliable current street price or verified current stock figure.
Before paying, confirm these specifics with the seller:
