Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo clean an audio CD, hold it by the edge and center hole, remove loose dust gently, then wipe the playing surface with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth in straight strokes from the center hole to the outer edge. If residue remains, use a cloth lightly dampened with distilled water; mild dish soap can help with greasy fingerprints if you rinse it off and dry the disc completely. Cleaning may stop skips caused by dirt, but it cannot reliably repair scratches.
Clean the CD without adding scratches
- Handle it by the edge and center hole. Avoid touching or flexing the playing surface. Inspect that side under good light to find dust, fingerprints, or attached dirt. The National Archives and Records Administration’s handling guidance recommends this careful handling.
- Remove loose dust gently. Use a gentle air puffer or clean air. Avoid forceful air and compressed solvent dusters; the Canadian Conservation Institute cautions against both. Do not rub dry dust across the disc.
- Wipe fingerprints or deposits radially. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Make straight strokes from the center hole out to the edge, lifting the cloth between strokes if needed. Do not wipe around the circumference. This reduces the chance of creating concentric scratches, which can be more troublesome for playback than scratches crossing the track. The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives also advises removing surface contamination before replay or storage.
- Use moisture only if dry wiping is not enough. Lightly dampen the cloth with distilled water and wipe radially. For greasy fingerprints, mild dish soap can help; rinse away soap with clean distilled water. Avoid immersing the disc when possible.
- Dry it fully. Blot gently with a clean, lint-free cloth or let the disc air-dry completely before playing or putting it away.
Avoid paper towels, abrasive cleaners, solvents, and routine use of liquid detergents. Isopropyl alcohol appears in specialist guidance for severe contamination, but it is not needed for ordinary household cleaning.
Understand what a scratch can—and cannot—tell you
A skip does not prove that the CD is scratched. Dirt or residue can interfere with reading, and cleaning may resolve that kind of problem. A scratch is different: radial scratches cross the track and are often less disruptive, while concentric scratches follow the disc’s circumference and can obscure a longer section of the data track. This is why cleaning strokes should go from center to edge, not around the disc.
Polishing may remove some surface material, but results are uncertain and the process can permanently alter the disc. The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that liquid polishing products can cause further damage and does not recommend scratch fillers: they have limited effectiveness and can flake into the player. The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives likewise cautions against polishing archival discs because it irreversibly removes material. Do not treat toothpaste or household abrasives as reliable repair methods.

Check the player if the CD still skips
- Try another player or computer. If the disc plays elsewhere, the original device may be the cause rather than the CD.
- Consider drive issues. A drive mechanism can wobble, its lens may be dirty, or an older drive may not read some CD-R or CD-RW discs. These are possibilities, not proof of a particular fault.
- Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. The Library of Congress guidance on audiovisual-material care says to follow the playback-machine manufacturer’s instructions. More thorough equipment cleaning should be handled by knowledgeable professionals with suitable equipment.
- Ask about recovery if playback remains faulty. The Library of Congress FAQ notes that recovery may be possible by ripping the disc to a computer and burning a new one, or by using a specialized recovery service. Neither option is guaranteed.
Store CDs to prevent avoidable damage
- Return each disc to its own case and store it upright. The National Archives prefers polypropylene cases.
- Keep handling to the edge and center hole, and avoid bending the disc.
- Do not add adhesive labels or peel off existing ones. If marking is unavoidable, use a water-based or non-solvent felt-tip marker on the clear inner hub, as the National Archives recommends.
- Clean only when contamination calls for it. The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives says carefully handled CDs do not require routine cleaning.
