Google separately confirmed a Google app backend issue that caused heat and battery drain on affected Android devices. If your Pixel is still unusually hot, the cause may be software, workload, charging conditions, the surrounding temperature, or a battery problem—not Android 14 alone.
What Android 14 changed for Pixel owners
Android 14 began rolling out to supported Pixel phones on October 4, 2023. Around that release, TechRadar reported owner accounts of Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 phones running cooler and lasting longer on battery after updating. Those reports are useful evidence that some owners noticed an improvement, but they were not a controlled test and do not show how many Pixel owners benefited. No reliable success rate has been established.
Android 14 did not add a new cooling component. Android’s thermal framework uses temperature data and mitigation behavior to manage a device if it begins to overheat. The framework helps manage thermal conditions; it does not guarantee that every cause of heat will disappear with a software update.
Why a Pixel can still get hot after updating
A background app or service
Google said a recent Google app backend change had caused overheating and battery drain on affected Android devices, and that it rolled out a fix. That is a documented example of a software-side cause, but it does not establish that the same issue explains every hot Pixel. Check battery usage for an app or process consuming unusually high power.

Charging, demanding use, or hot surroundings
Heavy workloads and charging can contribute to heat. Google’s guidance also warns against leaving a phone in direct sunlight or a hot car. A phone that warms during demanding use is a different diagnostic case from one that becomes hot while idle or during ordinary charging; note when the heat occurs and whether battery drain rises at the same time.
Post-update activity or a battery fault
Google says some battery drain immediately after an update can be normal and provides troubleshooting guidance for Android 14 and later. If the phone remains unusually hot, drains rapidly while idle, or its case or screen appears to separate, do not assume an update setting will fix it. A separating enclosure can indicate a swollen battery and calls for prompt professional assessment.

What to check if your Pixel is overheating
- Install available updates. Check for the latest available Pixel system update and update apps, including Google apps.
- Review battery usage. Open Android Settings and look at battery usage to identify apps or services consuming unusually high power.
- Use Google’s diagnostics and guidance. Follow the temperature or battery diagnostic options available for your device and Google’s Android 14-and-later battery troubleshooting instructions.
- Reduce heat while diagnosing. Keep the phone out of direct sun and hot vehicles, and temporarily reduce demanding activity. If heat is occurring while charging, note the circumstances rather than treating a software update as proof the charging setup is safe.
- Seek support if the problem persists. Contact Google support or an authorized repair provider if the phone stays abnormally hot, drains rapidly at idle, or shows signs of battery swelling.
How to tell whether this matches the Android 14 reports
The reports most directly concern Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 owners who noticed cooler operation or better battery life after moving to Android 14. To compare your experience meaningfully, record the Pixel generation, Android version and patch timing, whether heat occurs at idle or under load or while charging, how quickly the battery drains, and whether battery usage points to Google app or another background process. These clues can help narrow the issue, but they do not diagnose a hardware fault by themselves.
Google’s current support guidance covers battery drain and heat management, while the Android 14 reports remain anecdotal. If your symptoms persist despite updates and lower heat exposure, use Google’s diagnostics and support rather than assuming Android 14 has repaired the underlying cause.
