Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security on current macOS, find the relevant category, and review that app’s access. The right check depends on whether the app cannot reach a folder, control the Mac, use a camera or microphone, or perform another protected action.
First, identify what stopped working
“The app stopped working” can describe different problems, and they do not all point to privacy access. Note what happens and which feature is affected before changing another setting.
- The app crashes or will not launch: That alone does not establish that a privacy permission is responsible.
- The app cannot open or save something in a particular location: Check whether it needs access to that location under Files & Folders.
- One feature fails: Match it to the relevant category—for example, camera, microphone, recording, automation, input monitoring, or control of the Mac.
Record the exact behavior, the app’s name, the macOS version, and the permission category you changed. Those details are also what the app developer will need if the setting looks correct but the problem continues.
Use the settings path for your macOS version
On current releases, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security, then select the relevant permission category. Apple’s security guide distinguishes this from older versions: macOS 13 or later uses System Settings, while macOS 12 or earlier uses System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Check the permission that matches the failed feature
Review the affected app’s entry in the category tied to the feature. macOS permissions are separate controls, so enabling an unrelated category—or granting broader access “just in case”—may not address the failure.

Apple lists these as distinct privacy categories in its security documentation. Restore only the access the affected feature needs, and only for software you trust.

If the app is missing from Accessibility
Apple says you can add an app from the Accessibility category’s list using its Add control. Follow Apple’s Accessibility instructions for that workflow; do not assume the same add procedure applies to every privacy category.
Do not confuse privacy access with Finder permissions
Privacy settings control an app’s access to protected resources. Finder’s Get Info > Sharing & Permissions controls privileges for users and groups on a file, folder, or disk, such as Read & Write, Read only, or No Access. These are different controls. Do not recursively change file permissions to respond to a privacy prompt unless there is separate evidence of a file ownership or access problem. Apple explains protected-resource access in its security guide and Finder access in its instructions for changing file, folder, and disk permissions.

If the setting looks right but the app still fails
Apple’s permission guides explain how to review and control access; they do not establish one reset or recovery procedure that works for every app. Don’t assume that resetting a system database, using a Terminal command, reinstalling the app, or granting Full Disk Access will solve an unspecified failure.
- Write down the app name and the exact feature or action that fails.
- Note your macOS version and the permission category you changed.
- Confirm that the app has the specific access required for that feature, rather than changing unrelated categories.
- If the failure persists, consult the app developer’s support instructions with those details.
Without the app, macOS version, changed category, and precise symptom, the cause cannot be identified reliably.
