Inflate your inflatable paddle board (SUP) to the pressure specified on its own label or in its current manual—not to a universal PSI. Then fit and secure the correct fin, adjust the paddle, attach a leash suited to the water, and check your safety gear before launching. The setup sequence is straightforward, but valve, fin and pressure details vary by board.
1. Prepare the board and check its components
Unpack the board on a clean, level surface. Before inflating, look for visible damage and identify the inflation valve and fin-box system. Read the instructions for your exact model: board generations and fittings can differ. Check that the pump connector matches the valve and that the pump can reach the board’s specified pressure.
2. Set the valve and connect the pump
For the iROCKER boards covered by its manual guidance, set the inflation valve to CLOSED/UP before attaching the hose. Secure the connection so air does not escape around it. Valve operation can vary, so follow the instructions for your board rather than assuming every model works the same way.
3. Inflate to the pressure specified for your board
Use a gauge where available, and stop at the target and limit stated on the board or in its current manual. Do not treat one brand’s recommendation as the correct pressure for every inflatable SUP. For example, iROCKER recommends 15 PSI for its boards and says they can hold up to 23 PSI, while noting little performance benefit above 15 PSI (iROCKER FAQ). Red Paddle Co publishes a different, weight-dependent recommendation of 15–25 PSI and suggests 18 PSI if unsure (Red Equipment FAQ). These are manufacturer-specific recommendations, not a universal range or independent test; consult the current guidance for your model.

Choose a pump that fits and can control pressure
A high-pressure SUP hand pump with a gauge is a practical choice if it is supplied with the board or confirmed compatible. An electric SUP pump can reduce manual effort, but check its valve connector and pressure-control capability against your board’s target. iROCKER estimates that its 12V electric pump reaches 15 PSI in approximately 10–12 minutes on its system; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for other pumps or boards. The same FAQ notes that hand-pump time varies with effort.
4. Install the correct fin
Clean the fin and fin box, then use the instructions for your board’s specific slide-in, screw or locking mechanism. Fin systems are not universal. Make sure the fin is fully seated and secured before paddling. Red’s setup guidance includes fitting the fin, and iROCKER manuals describe board-specific mechanisms (Welcome to Red; iROCKER product manuals and catalogs).

5. Assemble and adjust the paddle
Assemble the paddle and set it to a comfortable paddling height. Secure its joints according to the paddle maker’s instructions, and check that they do not slip before you set off. Paddle adjustment is included in Red’s getting-started guidance (Welcome to Red).

Attach the leash as directed by the board and leash makers, but choose its type with the paddling venue and conditions in mind. A leash suitable for one setting may not be right for another. A U.S. Coast Guard National Boating Safety Advisory Council meeting record discusses leash suitability as venue-dependent; it is historical discussion, not a universal current rule. For moving water, surf or another higher-risk setting, seek local instruction (89th Meeting minutes).

Check the current rules where you will paddle and use a PFD appropriate to the activity. In the United States, the Coast Guard says a SUP used beyond the narrow limits of a swimming, surfing or bathing area is considered a vessel for PFD carriage requirements. Its guidance also says a life jacket should fit appropriately, suit the activity, be in good and serviceable condition, and be accessible. Requirements depend on location and circumstances, so check applicable state and local rules as well (U.S. Coast Guard boating FAQ; U.S. Coast Guard life-jacket guidance).

7. Make a final check and care for the board
- Confirm the board is at its model-specific target pressure and the valve connection is secure.
- Check that the fin is seated and locked, the paddle is adjusted and secured, and the leash is attached as instructed.
- Make sure your PFD and other required safety equipment are suitable and serviceable.
- Follow the manufacturer’s heat guidance; iROCKER warns that heat can lead to over-expansion. Do not leave an inflated board in prolonged direct sunlight without accounting for that guidance (iROCKER FAQ).
- After use, rinse and dry the board and accessories before storage as directed by their manufacturers. Red’s FAQ also provides board-care guidance (Red Equipment FAQ).
