A microSD card, when the exact phone model supports one, is removable storage for files and media. Samsung phones do not support Android’s Adoptable storage feature, so a card does not merge with internal storage or replace it. Some apps can move part of their footprint to a card, but that option is limited.
How SD card and internal storage differ
| Question | Internal storage | microSD card |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Storage built into the phone for the operating system, apps, and app data. | Removable external storage for files and media on compatible models. |
| Can you remove it? | No. It is part of the phone. | Yes. Unmount it before removal to reduce the risk of file problems. |
| Does it work with every Galaxy phone? | Yes, as the phone’s built-in storage. | No. A microSD slot and supported capacity depend on the exact model and regional variant. |
| Can it hold apps? | Yes. Apps and their data rely on internal storage. | Some app content may move if the app and phone expose that option; not all app data moves. |
| Does it become part of internal storage? | It remains the phone’s primary built-in storage. | No. Samsung says its Android devices do not support Adoptable storage. Samsung’s microSD guidance explains the limitation. |
Will an SD card become internal storage?
No. Samsung states that “Samsung Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature.” The card remains removable external storage; it does not become a full extension of the space used by Android and every app. Keep enough free internal storage for the system and apps, even if you add a card.
Does every Samsung Galaxy phone support a microSD card?
No. Card support is model- and market-specific, and so is the maximum supported capacity. Check the exact model number and regional version in its Samsung product specifications or manual before buying a card. A list for one country is not proof that the corresponding phone variant sold elsewhere has the same slot or limit.
For example, Samsung Canada’s list, updated October 15, 2025, gives the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra a maximum of 1TB; Samsung notes that its list covers phones sold in Canada and that variants can differ. In contrast, Samsung’s US specifications for the Galaxy A26 5G state support for cards up to 2TB. Those are examples for the named models, not a universal Galaxy limit. See Samsung Canada’s model list and Samsung’s Galaxy A26 5G specifications.

What can you store on a microSD card?
Files and media
Files are the most reliable use for a card: photos, videos, documents, and other files can be copied or moved there on a compatible phone. Samsung’s My Files instructions provide a general route to transfer files; exact menus can vary by software version. The card can also be removed and used to transfer files between compatible devices.
Some app content
Moving an app is conditional. Some apps cannot move, preloaded apps may be excluded, and an app that does move may still keep required data in internal storage. Do not assume the card will free the app’s entire storage footprint.

How to move files to an SD card
- Insert a compatible microSD card into the phone.
- Open My Files and select the files or folders to transfer.
- Choose Move or Copy, then select SD card.
- Open or create the destination folder and complete the transfer.
Choose Copy if you want the original to remain in internal storage; choose Move if you want to relocate it. Samsung’s My Files instructions cover moving and copying files. Gallery menus and behavior can differ, so My Files is the general file-management route.
Can you move apps to an SD card?
Try Samsung’s documented route: Settings → Apps → select an app → Storage → Change → SD card → Move. If Change does not appear, that app cannot be moved through this method. Settings labels can vary with software version and carrier. Even when the move is available, some app data may remain in internal storage. Samsung describes the process and limitation in its app-move guidance.

Which card type and capacity should you choose?
First match the card to the phone’s supported maximum. Samsung’s US support page gives these card-family capacity ranges: microSD up to 2GB, microSDHC up to 32GB, and microSDXC over 32GB up to 2TB. The phone’s own compatibility limit still governs which card it can use.
For high-resolution video, Samsung recommends microSDXC because it offers greater capacity and high read/write capability. That is a general recommendation, not a promise that every Samsung model supports every microSDXC capacity. Confirm the limit for your exact phone before purchase. See Samsung’s card-type and compatibility guidance.

Using a card for transfer or backup
A microSD card can be useful beyond day-to-day file storage. Samsung documents using an SD card as external storage for Smart Switch backup and restore. Its external-storage guidance also describes USB flash drives and SSDs; a USB OTG adapter may be required, depending on the phone and storage device. Check Samsung’s Smart Switch external-storage instructions for the applicable steps.

Remove or format a card safely
- Before removing it: unmount the card in the phone’s storage settings, then remove it. Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting guidance covers card handling.
- Before formatting it: copy anything you want to keep elsewhere. Formatting erases the card’s existing data, so make a backup first.
