You can study Harvard’s introductory computer science course for free through OpenCourseWare, then use its assignments and final project to build evidence of your skills. Start with CS50x 2026: Introduction to Computer Science. Completing it does not guarantee a job or, by itself, make you a tech professional—but it can give you a broad foundation and help you choose what to learn next.
Start with CS50x 2026
CS50x is designed for students and non-students, with or without prior programming experience. Harvard describes it as an introduction to computer science and programming; its course page says two thirds of CS50 students have never taken a computer science course before. You can work through the eleven weeks of material for free via OpenCourseWare.
The course starts with Scratch, then covers C, arrays, algorithms, memory, data structures, Python, SQL, artificial intelligence, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Flask. That breadth makes CS50x a sensible first course if you are still deciding which part of tech interests you.
Follow a roadmap from study to proof of skill
1. Work through the course, not just the lectures
Use the official course workflow: watch the lecture, optionally watch the section and shorts, complete the problem set, and finish the final project. The course is self-paced. Watching alone may introduce concepts, but solving the assignments and building a project gives you practical work to learn from and show.

2. Keep your work organized
Save your completed assignments and final project, along with short notes explaining what each project does and what you learned. A public portfolio is a practical way to make that work visible to others. Harvard’s course materials specify learning activities and requirements; they do not promise employment or a particular career outcome.
3. Choose a specialization after the foundation
Once you have a better sense of your interests, choose a next course rather than trying to study every branch at once. Harvard’s current free-course catalog lists CS50’s Introduction to Programming with Python, CS50’s Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python, CS50’s Introduction to Cybersecurity, and web-programming offerings.
Rank #2
- Python: deepen your programming practice with CS50’s Introduction to Programming with Python.
- Artificial intelligence: explore AI concepts and implementations with CS50’s Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python.
- Cybersecurity: study security concepts with CS50’s Introduction to Cybersecurity.
- Web development: build on the HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Flask topics in CS50x with a web-programming course.
Know what is free—and which certificate costs money
Free course access and certificate options are separate. Harvard’s OpenCourseWare route gives you the course content without charge. CS50 also says learners who score at least 70% on each required problem set and lab and complete the final project are eligible for a free CS50 Certificate. Harvard Online lists a $219 verified edX certificate for the course; that is a paid option, not a requirement for learning. The free CS50 Certificate and paid verified edX certificate are different credentials.
| Route | Cost | Credential | Breadth and assessment | Feedback access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenCourseWare study | Free, according to CS50’s course page | No certificate is stated as automatic just for accessing the course | Access to the eleven-week CS50x material; complete the course activities and project to practice the skills | Create an edX account if you want to submit work for feedback and use course communities |
| Free CS50 Certificate | Free, if requirements are met | CS50 Certificate | At least 70% on each required problem set and lab, plus completion of the final project | Create an edX account if you want to submit work for feedback and use course communities |
| Verified edX certificate | $219, listed by Harvard Online when accessed 2026-10-01 | Verified edX certificate | Harvard Online describes this option as including full assessed-course access | Full assessed-course access; see Harvard Online for the current listing and terms |
The course page and Harvard Online listing describe different routes and credentials. Check Harvard Online’s current terms before paying, since the listed price and offering may change.

What you can expect to learn
CS50x is a broad foundation rather than a single job-training track. Its curriculum can introduce you to:
- Problem solving and algorithmic thinking.
- Programming in C and Python, along with memory and data structures.
- SQL and database work.
- Web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Flask.
- Artificial intelligence concepts within the course’s broader computer science curriculum.
Use the final project to apply ideas from the course in a piece of work you can explain. Then choose a specialization course to develop skills in a more focused direction. Neither the course nor a certificate is evidence of a guaranteed job, salary, or professional status; your next steps depend on the role you want and the work you can demonstrate.

How to decide whether to pay for a certificate
If your priority is learning the material, the free OpenCourseWare route is enough to get started. If you want the free CS50 Certificate, plan around its stated score and project requirements. Consider the paid verified edX option only if that particular platform-issued credential and its assessed-course access are useful to you; it is not necessary to study the course.
