The announced ValueRAM modules were unbuffered PC1600 and PC2100 DIMMs, in 128MB and 256MB capacities. The partnership was part of a wider push to establish DDR as an alternative to Rambus RDRAM.
What Kingston and Nanya announced
EE Times reported on 19 March 2001 that Kingston would build DDR modules using Nanya SDRAM and ship PC1600 and PC2100 DIMMs through its channels in the United States, Europe and other world markets. Nanya’s company release the next day described the arrangement as an exclusive ValueRAM promotion: Kingston would manufacture the modules, while Nanya supplied the memory chips. These are historical specifications from Nanya’s release, not a guide to what a current computer supports. PC2100 was the higher-data-rate option in this pair, but the label alone cannot establish compatibility with a particular system.
What the modules cost in 2001

The partnership also sat within a broader DDR promotion. EE Times reported that Nanya bundled SDRAM modules with VIA’s DDR chipset for $99 per set, described at the time as 35% below the then-current market price; qualifying motherboard makers could receive sets for $90. Why DDR was competing with Rambus
The announcement arrived during an industry effort to make DDR a mainstream alternative to Rambus RDRAM, which was backed by Intel. By pairing Nanya’s chip supply with Kingston’s module manufacturing and distribution, the companies were addressing more than memory design: they were helping make DDR modules available through established sales channels.

EE Times reported that Nanya supplied about one-tenth of worldwide DDR chips at the time. Nanya executive vice president Charles Kau forecast deliveries of 1 million 128MB DDR SDRAM units in March 2001, 3 million in April and 6 million in June, and said the company ultimately hoped to capture 30% of the market. Those are contemporaneous supply figures and ambitions, not evidence that the targets were later achieved. EE Times.
VIA was also promoting the platform. The company said that the elements needed to establish DDR as the next mainstream memory standard would converge at CeBIT 2001, and that DDR was gaining market momentum. Those statements document the campaign and expectations of the period; they do not by themselves establish why the market later favored one memory standard over another. EE Times.

Can you use PC2100 DDR in an old computer?
Possibly, but the module name is not enough to decide. Compatibility depends on the exact motherboard and memory controller, including whether they support DDR SDRAM, the DIMM type and capacity, and unbuffered memory. Check the motherboard manual or manufacturer specifications for supported memory before buying or installing a legacy module. The 2001 announcement does not identify compatibility with any particular computer model.
PC1600 and PC2100 are both DDR generations from a much older platform era; neither is interchangeable with modern DDR4 or DDR5 merely because each is called a DIMM. A board built for a different memory generation has a different interface and electrical requirements. If considering a second-hand module, confirm its markings and physical type against the board documentation, and verify availability with the seller: current listings or stock for these legacy parts are not established by the 2001 announcement.
