You can set a website to open from your browser’s Home button, when the browser launches, or both. These are often separate settings. The steps below are for desktop versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Edge; menus on mobile may differ.
Homepage vs. startup page: what’s the difference?
Your homepage is the page that opens when you select the Home button. A startup page is what appears when you launch the browser. Google notes that the pages are not the same unless you set them to be. In Chrome and Edge, you configure them separately; Firefox’s cited setting controls “Homepage and new windows.”
Set your homepage in Chrome
These steps apply to Chrome on a computer. Google defines the homepage as the page that opens when you select Home, and the startup page as the page shown when Chrome first launches. Google Chrome Help
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Turn on Show Home button.
- Choose whether the Home button opens the New Tab page or a custom page. For a custom page, enter its web address in the field provided.
To choose what opens when Chrome launches, go to Settings > On startup. Select Open the New Tab page, Continue where you left off, or Open a specific page or set of pages. Choose the last option to enter the page or pages you want at startup; it does not change the Home button’s destination.

Set your homepage in Firefox
In Firefox, the homepage control also covers new windows. Mozilla’s support instructions were last updated June 3, 2026. Mozilla Support
- Open Firefox and select the menu button, then Settings.
- Select Home.
- Under Homepage and new windows, choose Firefox Home (Default), Custom URLs, or Blank page.
- If you chose Custom URLs, enter the address you want to use.
You can also open the page you want, then drag its tab onto the Home button and confirm the prompt. If the Home button is not visible, add it to the toolbar first. Mozilla says Firefox uses the New Tab page as its homepage by default.

Set your homepage in Microsoft Edge
In Edge, the Home button’s destination and the pages shown at startup are separate controls. Microsoft Support
- Open Edge and select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Select Start, home, and new tab page.
- Turn on Show home button.
- Choose New tab page or Enter URL. If you choose Enter URL, type the address you want the Home button to open.
Edge’s startup behavior is managed separately from the Home button URL. Microsoft’s policy documentation puts it this way: “The home page is the page opened by the Home button. RestoreOnStartup policies control the pages that open on startup.” Microsoft Edge policy documentation

If the homepage changes unexpectedly
A changed homepage, startup page, or search engine can be a sign of unwanted software, but the change alone does not confirm that your computer is infected. Google recommends resetting Chrome settings or removing unwanted software if you suspect this is the cause. Google Chrome Help: remove unwanted ads, pop-ups and malware
If you use a work- or school-managed Edge device, an administrator policy may set the Home button destination or startup pages. Microsoft documents these controls separately, so a policy can take precedence over the setting you expect to change. Check with your administrator if the setting is unavailable or keeps reverting.
