Before moving a self-managed Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana (ELK) deployment, identify the exact destination, the data and configuration that must move, and how you will prove the replacement works. The right migration method depends on the source and target deployment types, Elasticsearch versions, whether the original data can be replayed, and how much downtime you can accept. A move to managed Elastic and a move to another vendor are not interchangeable projects.

What should you decide before migrating?

Write down the migration’s boundaries before selecting a transfer method. At minimum, specify:

  • Destination: managed Elastic or another platform, the provider and region, and the target Elasticsearch version if applicable.
  • Workload: peak ingest rate, query concurrency, retention period, stored data volume, replica requirements, and expected growth.
  • Operational limits: acceptable downtime, maximum event lag, recovery point, and the conditions that would trigger a rollback.
  • Controls: data residency requirements, network routes, authentication and authorization needs, and who will operate the service.
  • Success criteria: which data, queries, dashboards, alerts, integrations, and applications must work before the old deployment can be retired.

Elastic’s migration guidance notes that available methods vary by source and destination deployment type. Its published migration procedures primarily cover Elastic-to-Elastic moves; do not assume those procedures or snapshot formats apply to another vendor. Check the target provider’s current compatibility and migration documentation for your exact source and destination.

What data and dependencies need to be inventoried?

Build separate inventories for stored data, Elastic feature state, and the systems that write to or read from the cluster. A successful index restore alone does not prove the service is ready.

Indices, streams, and cluster assets

  • List indices and data streams, their sizes and growth, mappings, aliases, templates, and representative queries.
  • Record ingest pipelines, scripts, lifecycle policies (ILM), snapshot lifecycle management (SLM), and relevant cluster settings.
  • Identify open and closed indices. Elastic snapshots cover open indices only.
  • Record snapshot repositories, credentials, network rules, and environment-specific settings that must be recreated outside the snapshot.

Feature and Kibana state

Treat feature data as a distinct migration category. Identify Kibana saved objects, security roles and role mappings, API keys or tokens, Fleet and integration configuration, Watcher, alerting and detection rules, machine-learning jobs, and any other features in use. Elastic states that Elasticsearch 8.0 and later backs up and restores system indices and system data streams through feature states. Confirm which feature states are needed and whether they are compatible with the destination version; a restore completing successfully does not establish that dashboards or feature data work correctly.

Producers, clients, and consumers

  • Inventory Beats, Elastic Agent, Logstash pipelines and plugins, APM components, Kafka or other external services, and every application that sends data.
  • List Elasticsearch clients, custom API calls, dashboards, alerts, scheduled jobs, exports, and downstream systems that query or consume the data.
  • Check each integration against the exact target version and service. Old indices, removed APIs, direct API integrations, or plugins may require changes.

Which migration method fits your source and destination?

Choose a method only after confirming it is supported for your deployment pair. Elastic documents source reindexing, dual ingest, snapshot and restore, the Reindex API, and Logstash-based approaches, but no single method applies to every source and destination.

Method When it may fit Checks and trade-offs
Reingest from the original source The original log source is still available and can replay data. Can avoid carrying the old cluster’s index representation and is flexible across Elasticsearch versions and deployment types according to Elastic’s migration overview. Validate parsing, enrichment, throughput, and replay completeness.
Dual ingest Logs or metrics have short retention and producers can send to both systems temporarily. Lets you validate the destination while the source remains in service. Account for duplicate ingestion, temporary service cost, and ensuring both destinations receive the events you expect.
Snapshot and restore You want to preserve indices and supported cluster or feature state, and the source-target pair supports it. Verify version compatibility, repository access, target capacity, and feature-state handling. Snapshots do not include every server setting or registered repository.
Remote reindex You need to copy documents and can rebuild the target index. Check exact version and deployment requirements, network reachability, source TLS certificates, source-cluster load, and target capacity.
Logstash or another supported pipeline You need to transform and forward records through an ingestion pipeline. Test pipeline configuration and plugins, parsing, back-pressure, and duplicate handling under representative load.

Reingesting, dual ingest, or pipeline forwarding may better fit a move to a different vendor than restoring an Elastic snapshot, but the supported route depends on that destination’s documented capabilities. Verify it rather than inferring compatibility from Elastic-to-Elastic guidance.

What must be ready for snapshot and restore?

Elastic identifies snapshot and restore as a common migration method, but it has specific prerequisites. Its guidance calls for a compatible Elasticsearch version and a destination cluster the same size as or larger than the source. Treat that as a minimum for this method, not a workload benchmark or guarantee of adequate performance.

Repository and transfer readiness

  • Confirm the destination can access the snapshot repository and has the required credentials and permissions.
  • Check storage capacity and network access, then perform a test restore before scheduling production cutover.
  • Estimate transfer time and network costs for the actual repository location and data volume. Cross-region or cross-provider transfers may take time and incur charges.
  • Account for resource use: creating and restoring snapshots can affect cluster performance.
  • If the destination cannot access the existing repository, Elastic describes copying repository contents to a supported object store such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, or Azure Blob Storage, or exposing contents through a read-only URL repository as possible approaches. Confirm the destination supports the chosen repository type and permissions.

State that must be handled separately

Snapshots include cluster state and regular data, but not node configuration files or registered repositories. Plan to recreate environment-specific settings, credentials, network rules, and repository registrations separately. Snapshots cover open indices only, so account for any closed indices that must be migrated by another route. For Elasticsearch 8.0 and later, explicitly plan feature-state handling for system indices and system data streams as well as the Kibana and Elastic feature data your deployment uses.

How do you test the destination before production?

Use a staging destination representative of production and test with sample data plus live or replayed data where practical. Test the whole path from producers to the applications and people who rely on the logs.

Plan capacity using the workload, not stored data size alone. Peak ingest, concurrent queries, retention, replicas, and recovery targets affect the required resources. Elastic’s same-size-or-larger guidance is a snapshot-method minimum; capacity beyond that depends on the workload and needs testing.

  1. Take an initial full snapshot and restore it to the destination.
  2. Repeat snapshots to carry over changes while the source continues operating.
  3. At the final synchronization, pause indexing or make the source indices read-only, then take the final snapshot.
  4. Restore the final snapshot. Close existing destination indices before restoring over them where required, then open them after restoration.
  5. Redirect ingestion and queries to the destination, then run the agreed validation checks before retiring the source.

Keep the source intact through a defined validation window. Before cutover, assign who can redirect writers and readers, establish how you will detect missing or duplicate events, and document how to revert endpoints or DNS. Set an acceptable lag threshold and a specific decision point for decommissioning; otherwise, “the migration looks fine” is not a testable retirement condition.

What should you compare if you have multiple managed-service candidates?

Evaluate candidates against the same workload and migration constraints rather than comparing feature lists in isolation.

  • Compatibility: exact source and target versions, feature support, plugins, and migration mechanisms.
  • Integration changes: agent, pipeline, client, and API changes required for ingestion and queries.
  • Cutover feasibility: available transfer methods, synchronization options, and achievable downtime for your environment.
  • Location and access: region, network path, data residency, and access-control requirements.
  • Capacity and cost: performance under representative ingest and query load, retention, storage, and transfer costs.
  • Operations: support terms, recovery options, and which responsibilities remain with your team.

Provider-specific pricing, regional availability, support terms, and cross-vendor compatibility need to be verified with each shortlisted service. They cannot be determined from a general Elastic migration procedure.
