To make an existing video appear live, send it through a streaming encoder or cloud playout service to YouTube or Facebook Live. Uploading a video normally does not turn it into a live broadcast. On YouTube, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and stream key in the encoder, check the incoming preview, then start the broadcast. Facebook uses a similar encoder-to-Live-Producer approach, but check Facebook’s current Live Producer interface and help materials for its exact steps, eligibility, and disclosure requirements.
Choose how to play and send the video
You need a tool that can play an existing video file and send its audio and video to a platform as a live feed. You can run this locally or use a cloud service:
| Option | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Local software encoder | The computer must stay powered, connected, and able to play the file for the duration of the broadcast. You or someone monitoring it handles restarts if playback or the connection fails. |
| Cloud playout service | The service can keep the video playing without leaving a dedicated computer running at your location. Check how it handles interruptions, restart and recovery, scheduling, monitoring, and current platform support. |
YouTube’s official encoder directory lists OBS as software and Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams; it also lists Upstream as a cloud live-streaming studio. These are examples from YouTube’s directory, not endorsements or confirmation of current features, prices, or Facebook compatibility. See YouTube’s encoder directory.
For a broadcast to both platforms, confirm directly with the provider that its current service supports file playback or looping, YouTube and Facebook destinations, the start method you need, stream-health monitoring, and recovery after a disconnect. A single tool may send to multiple destinations, or you may need to configure a separate output for each platform. Test each destination before relying on a shared multistream setup.

Set up the YouTube live stream
Check the channel and schedule
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. Its eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days and sets age 16 as the minimum to live stream. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
Connect the encoder and start
- In Live Control Room, find the stream’s server URL and stream key.
- Enter those credentials in the encoder’s streaming destination settings, then set the file to play or loop as needed. YouTube explains that the stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed so YouTube can accept it in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the video and audio look and sound right before selecting Go Live in the control room when that control is presented.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Use it when the encoder and workflow support it; YouTube’s guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Treat the stream key like a password: do not post or share it, and use the platform’s controls if it is exposed.

Set up Facebook Live with care
The general approach is to create or schedule a live video in Facebook Live Producer, then send the file through an encoder using the stream details shown by Facebook. A third-party how-to describes scheduling a Live video or event and sending prerecorded footage at the start time, but current Meta instructions for this exact workflow have not been established here. The specific interface, account eligibility, and any requirement to label prerecorded material may change or depend on the account.
Use the current Facebook Live Producer interface and Meta help materials to confirm the available setup, disclosure expectations, and whether your account can stream this way before announcing the event. Do not rely on an older tutorial or policy announcement as proof of current behavior.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
Test and monitor the broadcast
Before promoting the live event, run a test using the same file, encoder, connection, and settings you plan to use. YouTube specifically recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. For each platform, check:
- The correct destination, event, and privacy setting are selected.
- The preview has arrived and shows the intended framing and aspect ratio.
- Speech and other audio are audible, synchronized, and not clipped.
- The stream remains connected and the platform reports healthy incoming video.
- You know who will watch the stream and respond if playback or the connection stops.
For a two-platform broadcast, verify the preview and live status in each platform’s own control room. A preview in one does not establish that the other destination is receiving the feed.

- CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.
Plan for scheduled starts, interruptions, and replays
Scheduling the event and starting the video feed are separate parts of the workflow: depending on the platform and tool, a person may still need to start the encoder and approve or start the live broadcast at the scheduled time. Confirm the exact start sequence in each control room, and decide how you will respond to a disconnect rather than assuming a scheduled event will restart itself.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an uninterrupted stream lasting 12 hours or more will be archived in the same way. If preserving a replay matters, make a separate recording or plan shorter sessions, and check current platform behavior before relying on an archive.

Meta’s February 2025 storage-policy announcement described a 90-day period for users to act on older Facebook Live content by downloading it, transferring it to cloud storage, or converting it to a Reel. That was a dated announcement, not a guarantee of Facebook’s current replay-retention policy. Check Meta’s current information before relying on a particular retention period: Facebook Live video storage policy announcement.
