Food delivery by drone is a coordinated service, not simply a restaurant loading a meal onto an aircraft. A supported app checks whether an order and address are eligible; restaurant staff hand off a packaged meal at an operator’s loading point; software selects a route and aircraft; and certified pilots oversee the flight. At the destination, the drone may land or lower the package on a tether or winch. The exact process depends on the operator and location.
How does food delivery by drone work?
The typical sequence runs from an eligible order through restaurant handoff, route planning, supervised flight and customer collection. The aircraft is only one part of the system: ordering software, merchant procedures, delivery equipment, operating approvals and customer notifications all have a role.
- Place an eligible order. The customer orders through an app or marketplace that supports the drone service. The system checks whether the address and order meet that operator’s availability and operating constraints. Wing, for example, describes orders through supported partner apps or its own marketplace; DoorDash says its platform considers order contents and operational factors. Wing’s customer explainer and DoorDash’s system announcement describe their respective approaches.
- The restaurant prepares and hands off the package. Staff package the meal and transfer it to the operator’s loading point or equipment. Wing describes a staff member loading a pickup station. DoorDash emphasizes merchant handoffs and loading options designed around existing business operations. These are operator-specific examples, not a single industry-wide procedure.
- Software selects a route and dispatches an aircraft. The operator evaluates whether the order can be flown and plans the trip. Wing says its system chooses a route to avoid obstacles and other aircraft. DoorDash says its platform evaluates factors including weather, range, ground traffic, distance, package weight, order contents and preparation and delivery timing. Those are company descriptions; they do not establish a universal routing algorithm.
- The aircraft flies under operational oversight. Automation can support route planning and flight checks, while certified pilots oversee operations. In the United States, commercial package delivery is subject to FAA certification and airspace authorization requirements. The FAA describes the applicable framework in its package-delivery guidance.
- The drone makes the drop-off. Depending on the system, it may land or lower a package to a selected spot using a tether or winch. Wing describes lowering the order on a tether after checking the delivery area; DoorDash describes a winch; Zipline describes a tethered delivery device for placing a package. These mechanisms are not interchangeable descriptions of every drone.
- The customer collects the order. A notification can tell the customer the delivery has arrived. Wing says customers collect the package after it has been lowered and the aircraft clears the area. The sources do not establish one standard return, charging or turnaround procedure across operators.
How does a restaurant put food on a drone?
The restaurant generally does not have to place a meal directly on a flying aircraft. In Wing’s published workflow, a staff member loads a pickup station, from which the drone collects the packaged order. DoorDash describes merchant handoff and loading options intended to fit restaurant operations. The specific equipment, packaging and staff steps depend on the operator and its arrangement with the merchant.
This ground handoff is a substantial part of making a delivery service work. Order and inventory information must reach the right location; the package must be prepared for transfer; and the loading point must fit the aircraft and merchant workflow. DoorDash specifically emphasizes ground infrastructure and handoff as important challenges in scaling its system.

Does the drone land or lower the food?
Either approach is possible, and the delivery method varies by operator and aircraft. Wing describes using a tether to lower an order into a delivery zone after checking for obstacles such as cars or trampolines. DoorDash describes a winch and fail-safe provisions. Zipline describes a tethered device for placing packages in a selected location. A tethered drop can leave the aircraft above the delivery spot rather than requiring it to set down there, but it is not a universal design.
Aircraft designs also differ. The FAA identifies fixed-wing, multirotor and hybrid vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft among the types used for package delivery. Wing’s workflow is one company’s example, not a template for all delivery services.

Are delivery drones controlled by a person?
Commercial delivery can combine automated flight functions with human operational oversight. Wing describes automated route selection and flight checks alongside certified pilot oversight. This does not mean every aircraft is manually steered throughout every flight, nor does automation mean there is no responsible operator. The exact division of tasks depends on the service and its approvals.
In the United States, the FAA says operators carrying property for compensation beyond visual line of sight need the relevant Part 135 authority and airspace authorization. The agency describes a five-phase certification process. Its guidance also discusses beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations and a future role for UAS Traffic Management; that should not be confused with conventional positive air-traffic-control services already being provided to delivery operators.

What makes a delivery drone service work beyond the aircraft?
- Ordering and eligibility: The service must identify supported customers, addresses and orders.
- Merchant coordination: Staff need a practical way to package and transfer orders to the loading point.
- Route and aircraft planning: The operator must account for the order, aircraft capabilities and operational conditions.
- Delivery location: The system needs a suitable drop-off area and a method—such as landing or tether lowering—to place the package.
- Oversight and approvals: Commercial operations need qualified operator oversight and the applicable regulatory permissions.
- Customer communication: Notifications help the customer know when and where to collect the order.
The FAA also assigns operators responsibilities involving delivery infrastructure, local requirements and community engagement. The operational system therefore extends from the restaurant and loading point through the flight and delivery area.
Where are food delivery drones available?
Availability is limited by the operator’s actual service footprint, merchant participation, address eligibility and operational conditions. An announcement about a pilot or planned service does not mean drone delivery is available throughout a city or region. Check the supported app or marketplace for the specific delivery address and eligible restaurants.

Examples illustrate why it is important to check details rather than assume a common service model:
- Wing: Publishes a workflow using a pickup station, route planning and tethered delivery, and says customers can order through supported partner apps or its marketplace. U.S. availability depends on location. See Wing’s technology page and customer explainer.
- DoorDash Air: Its announcement described a Northern California pilot involving Chipotle, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Momo N Curry, with merchant handoff systems and a winch. Treat the named geography and pilot details as announcement-specific, not proof of current availability everywhere. See DoorDash’s system announcement.
- Zipline: Describes autonomous navigation and a tethered home-delivery system. Its safety page reports a cumulative delivery count, but that total includes deliveries beyond restaurant food and should not be read as a food-delivery figure. See Zipline’s home-delivery announcement and safety page.
How should delivery speed and safety claims be interpreted?
Published figures describe different companies, contexts and measures; they are not a neutral comparison of the industry. DoorDash said in its 2026 system announcement that about 80% of typical DoorDash restaurant orders are small and light enough for its aircraft to carry safely. That is DoorDash’s own analysis, not an independently audited industry statistic. The same announcement estimated under five minutes on average from restaurant to consumer door in initial tests. A later DoorDash Air announcement separately said drone deliveries averaged 25 minutes in 2025; it does not establish that this is the same measure or test context as the initial-test estimate. See the system announcement and the later announcement.

Zipline’s safety page showed 2,042,018 cumulative deliveries as of October 3, 2026. This is a live, company-reported total across deliveries, not a count of food deliveries or an independent safety rating. Wing, DoorDash and Zipline each describe safety features in their own systems, but those descriptions are not independent comparative safety findings. For example, Wing describes checking its drop zone for obstacles; DoorDash describes fail-safe provisions; and Zipline describes autonomous obstacle avoidance and redundant systems. See Zipline’s safety page and the operator descriptions above.
There is no neutral, independently published comparative statistic in these sources that measures the full food-drone workflow across operators. To compare services meaningfully, look at merchant handoff and packaging, aircraft and payload or range, delivery method, route and weather constraints, pilot oversight and authorizations, and the actual service footprint and order eligibility.
