Follow the delivery service’s instructions for the exact drop-off location and keep that area clear while the drone is delivering. Do not assume the drone will land: some systems release the package from above the ground, and delivery procedures vary by operator.
How to prepare the drop-off area
- Check the service’s delivery instructions. Use the location and procedure specified by your operator. The FAA says delivery operators choose their operating locations and must account for applicable state and local requirements, including land-use and zoning rules. Those operator and local details matter; this is not a universal instruction to modify your property. FAA guidance on package delivery.
- Keep the specified area clear during the delivery window. Move people and pets away, and keep vehicles, loose items, and other obstacles out of the requested spot. The operator’s directions—not a generic measurement—define the area to clear.
- Follow the service’s directions if the spot is obstructed. If you cannot keep it clear, contact the service or use an alternative it offers. Do not assume every operator has the same alternate-delivery process.
Does a delivery drone land or drop the package?
It depends on the system. In a 2024 FAA environmental assessment for Prime Air in Tolleson, Arizona, the MK30 aircraft releases a package from about 13 feet (4 metres) above the ground and remains airborne. That is an example of one service’s procedure, not a universal delivery height or a reason to put a landing pad at home. FAA’s Tolleson Prime Air environmental assessment.
Amazon says its Prime Air system checks whether a delivery spot is clear and may seek an alternative if it detects an obstacle. That description applies to Prime Air; do not rely on other services having the same detection capability. Amazon Prime Air safety information.
Do you need a landing pad or a particular size of clear space?
The sources do not establish a universal household drop-zone size or required home equipment. A landing pad is not a safe default recommendation when a service may release a package while hovering.

A separate 2024 FAA assessment describes a marked, cordoned DroneUp takeoff and landing area at an operator hub of at least 256 square feet (16 by 16 feet). That specification concerns the hub’s operating area, not a customer’s home drop-off spot; it should not be used as a household measurement. FAA’s DroneUp environmental assessment.

- Where the operator asks you to leave space for delivery.
- Whether its instructions describe a landing or an airborne package release.
- What it asks you to do if the requested area is occupied or obstructed.
These details can differ between services. For U.S. deliveries, the FAA’s materials describe operator responsibilities and particular systems; they do not establish one household checklist that applies everywhere.
