Stop using the suspicious app and do not enter any more passwords into it. Installing a fake Zoom app does not by itself prove that it ran, stole credentials, or left malware on your Mac. What to do next depends on whether you opened it, entered account details, approved a configuration profile or permissions, and whether the Mac is managed by work or school IT.
Stop using the app and note what happened
Do not sign in to the suspicious app or provide it with more information. Make a note of where you downloaded it, when you installed it, whether you opened it, and what prompts or permissions you approved. That account can help technical support or your organization’s IT team assess what may have happened.
Downloading an app is not the same as running it. macOS uses Gatekeeper checks and first-open approval for downloaded software, among other protections. If you only downloaded the installer and never opened it, that is different from opening the app or approving a security override; neither circumstance alone proves whether the Mac is clean. Apple advises that “Overriding security settings to open an app is the most common way that a Mac gets infected with malware.” Apple’s guidance on overriding security settings explains that process.
Remove the suspicious app carefully
If you can identify the suspicious app and remove it safely, do so. Apple’s malware and app-security guidance does not provide one universal cleanup procedure for every counterfeit installer, so deleting a visible app should not be treated as proof that every related component has been removed or that no data was accessed. Do not disable Gatekeeper or lower macOS security settings to open or inspect the app.

Check for an unexpected configuration profile
A configuration profile can change settings and may install apps or manage a Mac. Some profiles are legitimate, particularly on employer- or school-managed devices. If you are unsure whether a profile is organizational, ask the administrator before removing it.
- On macOS 13 or later: open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Device Management.
- On macOS 12 or earlier: open Apple menu > System Preferences > Profiles.
- Review profiles for one you do not recognize. If you determine an unexpected profile is not legitimate, select it and remove it, then restart the Mac. Removing a profile also deletes settings, apps, and data associated with it.
See Apple’s instructions for reviewing and deleting configuration profiles for details.

If you entered Zoom credentials, secure your Zoom account
Use a trusted browser or another device—not the suspicious app—to access the Zoom web portal. If you typed your Zoom password into the fake app, reset it. If you reused that password on other services, change it there as well, using a different password for each account.
- In the Zoom web portal, open Profile and inspect Where you’re logged in.
- Sign out of sessions you do not recognize. You can sign out of all sessions if appropriate.
- Enable two-factor authentication if it is available for your account.
Zoom notes that signing out of sessions does not end active meetings or revoke resources already shared during them. If Zoom sends a compromised-account notification, it says it signs the account out on all devices and requires a password reset. Read Zoom’s instructions for managing signed-in devices and sessions and its guidance on compromised-account notifications.

If you entered Apple Account details, check that account too
Entering Apple Account credentials into the suspicious app, or seeing signs of account activity you did not initiate, is a reason to secure the account. Change the Apple Account password, review account details, remove devices you do not recognize, and confirm that the associated email addresses and phone numbers are still under your control. Installing the app alone does not establish that your Apple Account was exposed. Follow Apple’s compromised Apple Account guidance.

Install available macOS updates and watch for unexpected account activity, profiles, or other suspicious behavior. Apple describes layered protections that include Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect; XProtect automatically checks for known malicious content and receives signature updates. These features reduce risk, but they do not establish that a particular Mac has been fully cleared.
