Solana commonly creates a mint account under a token program, while Ethereum deploys a smart contract—often one implementing the ERC-20 standard. Their fees, token controls, wallet workflows, and failure modes differ, so choose based on the token behavior you need and the controls you can secure, then compare live costs for equivalent launch steps.
How token issuance differs
Solana: a mint and token accounts
A common Solana launch creates and funds a mint account, initializes its configuration, and sets its mint and freeze authorities. Users’ balances are held in token accounts associated with that mint. The particular token program and any extensions matter: a launch should identify them and explain which authorities remain active. Solana’s network-writing example illustrates mint creation and setup.
Authorities are operational controls, not merely setup details. Depending on configuration, an authority may mint additional units, freeze token accounts, delegate actions, or change or revoke authority. Solana’s SPL Token basics documents these authority operations.
Ethereum: a deployed contract
On Ethereum, an ERC-20 token is implemented by a smart contract. Deploying the contract writes code to the blockchain and requires an ETH-paid transaction; deployment uses more gas than the basic ETH transfer example discussed below. The ERC-20 standard defines an interface that helps applications recognize fungible tokens, but it does not guarantee that every contract receiving a token can handle it correctly.

How launch fees work—and why there is no fixed winner
Solana charges transaction fees in SOL. Its documentation gives a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature; transactions can also include an optional prioritization fee based on compute-unit price and compute-unit limit. That base-fee figure is not the total price of creating a token: a launch may include multiple instructions, and creating token accounts can require funding their rent-exempt balance. See Solana’s fee documentation.
Ethereum fees are paid in ETH and depend on gas used and prevailing fee conditions. In ethereum.org’s gas explanation, the fee calculation is gas used multiplied by the base fee plus any priority fee. Its example of 21,000 gas applies to a standard ETH transfer, not an ERC-20 deployment or a token-launch estimate. Contract deployment and interactions require gas according to the work performed, and network demand affects the fee. See ethereum.org’s gas and fees overview and its explanation of smart-contract deployment.

These published figures measure different things: a Solana base fee per signature and Ethereum gas units for a simple transfer. They do not establish which network costs less for equivalent token launches. To compare, define the same token behavior and include all required transactions, then check the fee conditions when you intend to submit them.
Wallets and signing: what to protect
A wallet interface is not the same as a key-custody policy. A wallet signs transactions using keys; anyone who obtains the relevant signing authority may be able to act with it. For a launch, separate everyday operational funds from treasury holdings, protect backups, and make sure signers understand the actions they authorize.

- Keep private keys out of frontend code. Solana’s production-readiness guidance recommends secure key handling, encrypted backups in multiple secure locations, and separation of hot operational wallets from cold treasury wallets.
- Consider an appropriate signing method, which may include a hardware wallet, but verify that it supports the chain, application, and exact workflow you plan to use. The cited guidance lists hardware wallets among possible signing options; it does not compare models or establish universal compatibility.
- Before signing, check the network, recipient address, token mint or contract address, requested permissions, and transaction details. Classify the recipient rather than assuming every address is a normal wallet: Solana guidance warns that sending native SOL to a mint or program address can cause irreversible loss.
- Do not treat a signing device as a code auditor or token-authenticity check. It can support key security, but the signer still needs to understand the transaction and assess the token and contract.
Risks to disclose and plan for
Token controls can affect holders
For Solana tokens, state plainly whether mint, freeze, delegation, or extension authorities remain, and what each can do. Token-2022 extensions change token behavior; for example, a transfer-fee extension can withhold a configured portion of transfers and assigns authorities that can withdraw withheld fees. Explain the actual configuration rather than describing an extended token simply as standard. Details are in the transfer-fee extension documentation.
For Ethereum contracts, disclose who can mint, pause, upgrade, or move assets, if those powers exist. Ethereum’s smart-contract security guidance notes that deployed code can be difficult to patch and stolen contract assets difficult to recover. Access-control design and the people or keys holding privileged roles are therefore part of the trust model.

Failures and mistaken transfers may cost money or lose assets
An Ethereum transaction that runs out of gas during execution reverts its state changes but still consumes gas for the work performed. A failed interaction is not necessarily free. Separately, an ordinary ERC-20 transfer does not require the receiving contract to implement a callback; sending tokens to a contract that cannot handle them can leave them stuck or lost, as the ERC-20 documentation explains.
On either network, losing access to signing keys can permanently prevent recovery of assets. Address mistakes and misunderstood permissions are also serious launch risks; verify addresses and transaction contents before approving actions, and limit privileged access to the people and processes that need it.

Test environments are not proof of production safety
Solana’s production-readiness guidance distinguishes devnet, where test SOL is free and competition is low, from mainnet, where transactions involve real fees and priority-fee considerations. Rehearsing a launch on devnet can help catch workflow errors, but it does not prove production readiness, validate every mainnet condition, or substitute for a code review or security audit.
Quick Recap
A practical choice framework
- Start with required behavior: identify whether the token needs a particular application ecosystem, contract behavior, Solana token program, or Token-2022 extension.
- Map every privileged action: list who can mint, freeze, pause, upgrade, withdraw withheld fees, or otherwise change token behavior. Decide which powers are necessary and disclose retained authorities.
- Check the complete workflow: confirm that the wallets, applications, signers, and operational controls your team will use support the exact issuance and custody setup.
- Estimate equivalent costs: count the necessary transactions and contract or account setup for the same token features. Compare current network fees at submission time; do not compare a per-signature base fee with a simple-transfer gas example as if either were a launch quote.
- Assess recovery and review capacity: consider what happens if a key is lost, a transaction is misdirected, or code has a flaw, and arrange appropriate review before production deployment.
