Download macOS updates through Software Update, the App Store, or Apple’s Downloads site. For an Apple installer package, check its certificate in Installer against Apple’s published requirements. For third-party software, heed Gatekeeper’s signature and notarization warnings. These checks help establish where software came from and whether it has changed, but they cannot guarantee it is harmless.
Start by checking where the installer came from
For Apple macOS software and updates, use Software Update, the App Store, or Apple’s Downloads site. Apple says its software updates are digitally signed and that Software Update verifies the signature automatically before installation. Avoid download mirrors and links in unsolicited messages.
For third-party software, go to the developer’s own site using its known address or a link from a trusted official page. Check that the product and publisher match what you intended to download. A familiar-looking name alone does not establish that a file is genuine.
Verify an Apple software update package (.pkg)
Apple’s certificate procedure applies to the documented Apple software update package check; its fingerprint is not a universal value for third-party installers.

- Open the package in Installer to display its information.
- Click the lock or certificate icon in the upper-right area of the Installer window.
- Check the certificate authority and status. Apple says the expected authority is “Apple Software Update Certificate Authority,” and the certificate should be valid, indicated by a green checkmark.
- Expand Details and compare the SHA-256 fingerprint with Apple’s published value:

Do not install the package if it has no certificate icon, shows a different authority, has an invalid certificate, or has a fingerprint that does not match. See Apple’s full instructions in How to verify the authenticity of manually downloaded Apple software updates.
For other downloads, pay attention to Gatekeeper
When you install apps, plug-ins, and installer packages from outside the App Store, macOS checks for a Developer ID signature. That signature helps establish that the software comes from an identified developer and has not been altered since signing. On macOS Catalina and later, downloaded software is also generally required to be notarized. If macOS says it cannot verify the developer or check the app for malicious software, stop rather than treating the warning as a minor setup obstacle. Apple advises contacting the developer, checking whether the app is available in the App Store, or finding an alternative. Do not assume a file is legitimate just because it opens or appears to come from a familiar publisher.
Apple documents an “Open Anyway” option for cases where a user is certain about a download’s source and integrity. Using that override does not verify the software; running unsigned or unnotarized software carries risk. Do not use an override as a substitute for checking provenance.

What a signature and notarization do—and do not—prove

Apple describes notarization as a malware-scanning service, not a guarantee of safety. It can issue a revocation ticket later if software is identified as malicious, while XProtect provides an additional layer of malware detection and remediation.
