Usually, no: Dell does not document one universal BIOS setting or shortcut that locks every keyboard. If keys stop responding in Windows, first check Filter Keys. A Windows session lock, function-key lock, or keyboard-backlight setting can look like a keyboard problem, but each affects something different.
First identify what stopped working
Separate a complete lack of input from a sign-in screen, unexpected function-row behavior, or keys that work while the backlight stays off. Also note whether the problem occurs only in Windows or during startup and in BIOS. These symptoms point to different settings; Dell does not establish a single keyboard-lock control for all models.
- No or delayed input in Windows: check Filter Keys.
- Windows sign-in screen: the session may be locked, not the keyboard disabled.
- Function-row keys do the wrong thing: check Fn Lock and model-specific function-key settings.
- Typing works but the keys are dark: check backlight controls.
- Only some keys fail, or input fails outside Windows too: continue to device isolation and model-specific diagnostics.
When keys seem unresponsive in Windows, check Filter Keys
Filter Keys is a Windows accessibility feature that can change how key presses are handled. Dell says it may be enabled by holding the right Shift key for eight seconds. Clicking sounds while typing or an On-Screen Keyboard that works are clues Dell associates with this issue; they are not proof by themselves that Filter Keys is the cause.
Turn Filter Keys off
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Switch Filter Keys off.
- If right-Shift activation is happening accidentally, open the Filter Keys options and disable the keyboard shortcut that turns the feature on.
For Windows 10, Dell directs users to Ease of Access settings and the keyboard options. The exact labels may differ from Windows 11. Dell’s guidance covers Windows 10 and 11 and was last modified July 20, 2026.

Windows+L locks your session, not the keyboard
Windows+L locks the Windows session. Sign back in with the account’s normal sign-in method; the shortcut is not a Dell keyboard-disable command. If the sign-in screen is visible and the keyboard works there, the issue is more likely with the locked session or application than with a universal keyboard lock.
Fn Lock changes function-row behavior
On some Dell keyboards, Fn+Esc toggles Function Lock. This changes which action the function-row keys perform; it does not disable ordinary typing. Dell also documents BIOS configuration for function-key behavior on some systems. The available options and labels vary by model, so use the manual for the exact Dell model rather than assuming a BIOS menu is present.

A BIOS backlight setting affects lighting, not typing
Dell’s documented BIOS keyboard control in this context concerns illumination on supported laptops. Disabling keyboard illumination keeps the backlight off; it is not evidence that normal key input has been disabled. Dell says the option appears only on laptops with backlit keyboard hardware, so a missing option may simply mean the model does not have that hardware. Check the model’s manual for the relevant BIOS setting and backlight key.

If the built-in keyboard cannot be used, Dell lists an external USB, Bluetooth, or wireless keyboard as a temporary input method. In Windows, press Windows key+Ctrl+O to open the On-Screen Keyboard. These options let you enter text; they do not repair or unlock a faulty built-in keyboard.
