Google promises seven years of Android OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and newer models, and five years for the listed Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and original Pixel Fold models. The clock starts when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US—not when you bought it. Pixel 5a and earlier models listed by Google no longer receive Android version or security updates.
How many years of updates does each Pixel get?
Google’s policy depends on the model. Its current list includes Pixel 8 and later phones in the seven-year group, and Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold models in the five-year group. The term covers both Android operating-system updates and security updates. Google says feature updates through Pixel Drops may also be included, but does not promise that every feature will reach every supported model. See Google’s Pixel software update policy for the full model list.
| Pixel models | Google’s stated update term |
|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later, including the listed Pixel 8, 9, 10, and 11 families | Seven years of OS and security updates |
| Listed Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold models | Five years of OS and security updates |
| Pixel 5a and earlier models listed by Google | No longer receive Android version updates or security updates |
When will my Pixel stop getting updates?
Google measures the support period from the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. It publishes those availability dates by month, so the end months below are estimates based on adding the stated term; they are not exact expiration dates published by Google. Availability information is in Google’s Pixel availability table.
| Model | First US Google Store availability | Update term | Approximate end month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 / 8 Pro | October 2023 | 7 years | October 2030 |
| Pixel 8a | May 2024 | 7 years | May 2031 |
| Pixel 9 / 9 Pro XL | August 2024 | 7 years | August 2031 |
| Pixel 9 Pro / 9 Pro Fold | September 2024 | 7 years | September 2031 |
| Pixel 9a | April 2025 | 7 years | April 2032 |
| Pixel 10 / 10 Pro / 10 Pro XL | August 2025 | 7 years | August 2032 |
| Pixel 10 Pro Fold | October 2025 | 7 years | October 2032 |
| Pixel Fold | June 2023 | 5 years | June 2028 |
| Pixel 7 / 7 Pro | October 2022 | 5 years | October 2027 |
| Pixel 7a | May 2023 | 5 years | May 2028 |
| Pixel 6a | July 2022 | 5 years | July 2027 |
| Pixel 6 / 6 Pro | October 2021 | 5 years | October 2026 |
Google’s current policy also places Pixel 10a and Pixel 11 family models in the seven-year group. Its availability table lists Pixel 10a as first available in March 2026 and Pixel 11 family as first available in August 2026, implying approximate end months of March 2033 and August 2033 respectively. These are estimates from month-level availability data, not exact final dates.

Does the update clock start when I buy the phone?
No. The support term begins with the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US, not your purchase date. A phone bought later in its lifecycle therefore has less time remaining in Google’s stated update window than a newly released model. The policy and availability reference point are US-based; the cited table does not establish a separate start date for other markets.
How do I check my Pixel’s Android version and security update?
- Open Settings.
- Go to System, then Software update.
- Review the Android version and security update level shown on the device; use the available option to check for an update manually.
Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and availability can depend on the device and carrier. An update may take a few weeks to reach a phone after it is ready. Regular updates can include new features, security enhancements, operating-system updates, and bug fixes.

What update support means for an older Pixel
For a model still within its stated support term, the term describes Google’s update commitment, not a guarantee that a particular release arrives on the same day for every owner. For a Pixel 5a or earlier model identified by Google as no longer receiving OS or security updates, the cited policy does not promise future patches. Whether to keep or replace an older phone depends on its condition, cost, and your need for current security updates; Google’s support policy alone does not establish that every owner should replace a working device.

Google says telephone or online Pixel support continues for at least as long as the device receives security updates. This is a customer-support statement, not a separate hardware-warranty period. See Google’s Pixel support information.
