The center added product-analysis and electronics-testing services to the company’s existing manufacturing presence, including test characterization, in-circuit testing, and X-ray laminography.
What the Flextronics Technology Center offered
The center was designed to support original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with product analysis and testing alongside manufacturing services. Its stated capabilities included:
- Test characterization: analysis to help evaluate a product and its testing needs.
- In-circuit testing: testing of electronic assemblies.
- X-ray laminography: inspection capability included in the center’s test programs.
The contemporaneous EE Times report and EDN report, both published December 10, 2002, describe these services as part of the facility’s offering.
Why Flextronics added analysis and testing in Guadalajara
Flextronics positioned the center as a way to integrate product analysis and characterization with its manufacturing services, helping OEM customers move new products toward production more quickly. Mike McNamara, then the company’s chief operating officer, said the combined offering was intended to meet customer demand to accelerate new product introductions.

The move also reflected a broader industry effort by electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers to add services in Mexico as OEMs weighed manufacturing options, including lower-cost Asian production, particularly in China. The reports do not provide comparative prices or measured speed improvements for the Guadalajara center.
What is known about the opening—and what is not
The two December 10, 2002 reports establish the opening date, location, and named service capabilities. They do not state an investment amount, headcount, facility size, or testing capacity for the technology center.

Flex’s later announcements should not be conflated with this opening. For example, a 2022 Flex announcement described a 145,000-square-foot automotive facility expansion in Jalisco; that figure refers to a separate, much later project, not the 2002 Guadalajara technology center.

Flex’s current Mexico careers page describes innovation, design, engineering, manufacturing, and supply-chain services at locations including Guadalajara, Juárez, Tijuana, Aguascalientes, and San Luis Río Colorado. Its global locations page identifies Guadalajara North as a Customer Experience Center and lists multiple Mexican sites. These present-day pages show the company’s current footprint; they do not establish which locations existed in 2002.
