To choose a Windows 11-compatible PC, confirm that its exact processor is on Microsoft’s supported list, then check TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot capability as separate requirements. Also verify memory, storage, graphics, and display: passing one check—such as having TPM 2.0—does not prove the whole PC is eligible. If you are assessing a current computer, use Microsoft’s PC Health Check and follow up on the specific requirements it does not assess.

Windows 11 requirements to check

Microsoft’s minimum specifications apply together. A processor’s speed and core count do not establish compatibility unless the exact model is also on Microsoft’s compatible processor list.

Requirement Minimum or capability to confirm
Processor 1 GHz or faster, at least 2 cores, a compatible 64-bit processor or SoC, and inclusion on Microsoft’s approved processor list.
Memory At least 4 GB RAM.
Storage At least 64 GB.
System firmware UEFI firmware and Secure Boot capability.
Security TPM version 2.0.
Graphics DirectX 12 compatible, with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
Display Greater than 9 inches diagonally, at least 720p resolution, and 8 bits per color channel.
Initial setup Internet access and a Microsoft account are required during setup for Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use.

These are minimum compatibility specifications, not a recommendation for every workload. A PC that meets them may still be a poor fit if its performance, capacity, screen, or upgrade options do not suit how you plan to use it. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications for the official checklist.

Why the CPU, TPM, and Secure Boot checks are different

CPU: check the exact model

Look up the full processor model in Microsoft’s compatible processor list. A processor that runs at 1 GHz or faster and has at least two cores can still fail the requirement if Microsoft does not list it. Microsoft says processor clock speed and core count are inherent to the design and are not considered upgradable components; replacing a processor is not a routine fix for an unsupported CPU.

TPM 2.0: confirm the version

TPM is a security processor, and the Windows 11 requirement is TPM version 2.0. The presence of a TPM, or a setting labelled TPM, does not by itself confirm the required version. Check the PC maker’s instructions for your specific model.

UEFI and Secure Boot: confirm capability separately

The computer must support UEFI and be Secure Boot capable. Secure Boot depends on UEFI, so TPM 2.0 does not prove that the firmware requirement is met. Consult the manufacturer before changing firmware settings; available options and instructions vary by model.

How to check whether your current PC qualifies

  1. Run PC Health Check. On a Windows 10 PC, download and run Microsoft’s PC Health Check. Review the eligibility result and any specific reasons it gives for a failed check.
  2. Verify the exact processor. Compare its full model name with Microsoft’s compatible processor list. Do not decide from clock speed or core count alone.
  3. Check TPM, UEFI, and Secure Boot. Use the PC maker’s model-specific directions to confirm TPM 2.0 and UEFI/Secure Boot capability. Treat these as distinct checks.
  4. Compare the remaining specifications. Check RAM, storage, graphics, and display against the requirements above. Microsoft notes that PC Health Check does not check the graphics card or display, so verify those separately.
  5. Follow your organization’s process if the PC is managed. Ask your IT administrator about compatibility and upgrades rather than changing a managed device’s settings yourself.

Eligibility and immediate upgrade availability are not identical. Microsoft may temporarily delay an upgrade when a known compatibility safeguard identifies a problem that could disrupt use, such as an app or driver issue. Check the upgrade status as well as the hardware result. Microsoft explains its upgrade-availability checks in How to use the PC Health Check app.

Keep, upgrade, or replace?

Keep the PC if it meets the requirements and suits your needs

If all requirements are satisfied, decide whether the PC has enough capacity and performance for your intended use. Minimum compatibility does not guarantee that a computer will feel fast or provide enough storage for your apps and files.

Upgrade RAM or storage only when the model allows it

Some computers permit memory or drive upgrades, but support depends on the manufacturer and device design. Confirm the exact model’s upgrade instructions and component compatibility before buying parts. These upgrades do not make an unsupported processor eligible, add missing UEFI/Secure Boot capability, or establish TPM 2.0 support.

Replace a PC with a fundamental compatibility shortfall

If the installed processor is not supported, or the PC lacks required firmware or security capability and the manufacturer offers no supported remedy, a replacement may be the practical option. Microsoft identifies getting a new compliant device as an option for PCs that do not meet Windows 11 requirements.

What to verify when buying a replacement

Check the precise configuration, not just a general product-family name or a “Windows 11” label. Confirm the processor model and TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot capability first, then compare RAM, storage, graphics, display, workload needs, price, and upgradeability. Manufacturers may sell different configurations under similar names, so verify the specifications for the exact device you intend to buy.
