Windows 10’s standard support ended on October 14, 2025. Your choices now are to use an eligible Extended Security Updates (ESU) option, install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware while accepting Microsoft’s warnings, switch to an alternative such as ChromeOS Flex or Ubuntu, or replace the PC. The right choice depends on the programs and devices you rely on, your PC’s exact model, and whether you need ongoing security updates.
First, confirm why the PC fails Windows 11’s requirements
A failed compatibility check does not always mean you need a new computer. Microsoft’s requirements include a compatible processor, at least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, and compatible graphics. Some PCs can be upgraded or reconfigured; a processor’s speed and core count cannot be changed. Check Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements and your manufacturer’s options for your exact model before deciding.
- If the issue is a setting such as TPM or Secure Boot, check the manufacturer’s documentation before changing firmware settings.
- If RAM or storage is the problem, find out whether those components are replaceable and whether an upgrade would satisfy the requirements.
- If the processor is unsupported, confirm that against Microsoft’s current compatibility information; processor speed alone does not establish eligibility.
Know what staying on Windows 10 means
Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The PC will continue to work, but it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes through standard support. Microsoft says security updates for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 continue through October 10, 2028; that date applies to those apps’ updates, not general Windows 10 support. Some eligible PCs can enroll in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program. ESU is a limited security-update option, not a return to ordinary Windows 10 support. Eligibility, enrollment terms, and duration depend on Microsoft’s current program conditions, so check the Windows 10 ESU information for your PC and region.

Should you install Windows 11 anyway?
Installing Windows 11 on hardware that fails its minimum requirements is an unsupported choice, not a standard upgrade path. Microsoft says it is not recommended; such devices may have compatibility problems, and Microsoft does not guarantee updates, including security updates. Microsoft also warns that a device might malfunction because of compatibility or other issues. Read its guidance on Windows 11 installations that do not meet minimum requirements before considering this route.
A bypass does not make an ineligible PC supported. If you depend on the computer for work, sensitive information, or applications that must remain reliable, weigh that uncertainty against a supported Windows PC or a tested alternative.

ChromeOS Flex: a web-focused option for supported models
Google says ChromeOS Flex works on many Windows, Mac, and Linux devices made over the last decade or more, but that general age guidance does not guarantee compatibility for a particular PC or every feature. Search Google’s certified-model list for the exact make and model. Check its listed support dates, installation notes, and feature limitations before committing; some features on non-Chromebook hardware are not officially supported.
Flex is worth considering if you mostly use a browser and web apps. It is a less suitable choice when a required program is available only for Windows or when your workflow depends on a device feature that the certified-model entry does not support.

Ubuntu: a desktop alternative to test against your needs
Ubuntu’s download page lists Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS and recommends a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of free storage for Ubuntu Desktop. Canonical states that Ubuntu 26.04 LTS receives five years of free security and maintenance updates, with support ending in April 2031. These are release-specific requirements and dates; see the Ubuntu Desktop download page for current details.
If the PC has limited memory or performance, Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 release notes point readers toward official flavors such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu. A lighter desktop may be a better fit, but you should still check whether your applications, peripherals, and hardware work with the version you plan to use. See the Ubuntu 26.04 release notes.

Test an alternative before replacing Windows
A live USB trial lets you check basic hardware compatibility without first replacing the installed operating system. Ubuntu’s installation instructions require an 8 GB or larger USB stick for the documented installer workflow. Creating the installer erases the stick, so back up anything on it before writing the image. Follow Canonical’s instructions for creating Ubuntu installation media on Windows.

- Back up your important files before making operating-system changes.
- Use an 8 GB or larger USB stick with nothing on it that you need to keep; creating the installer overwrites its contents.
- Start the PC from the USB and choose the option to try the desktop without installing, if offered.
- Test the tasks you actually depend on: Wi-Fi or Ethernet, sound, graphics, sleep and wake, printers, and essential application workflows.
- If something important fails, check the operating system’s hardware or application support before installing it. A successful live session is useful evidence, but does not prove every installed workflow will work.
Choose based on the work the PC must do
- Choose a supported Windows PC if an essential application, accessory, or workplace workflow requires Windows and you cannot accept uncertainty about support.
- Consider ChromeOS Flex if the PC’s exact model is certified and your day-to-day work fits a browser-centered system.
- Try Ubuntu or an official Ubuntu flavor if you want a general-purpose desktop and have verified that your software and hardware suit it.
- Consider eligible Windows 10 ESU as a limited bridge if you must keep the existing Windows setup; check the current enrollment terms rather than assuming updates continue automatically.
- Avoid treating a Windows 11 bypass as a supported fix. Microsoft’s warnings about compatibility and unguaranteed updates remain in force.
