For a new general-purpose PC or laptop, 16 GB of RAM is a flexible target if your budget and configuration allow it. For basic browsing, documents, and video, 8 GB is a reasonable starting point; for photo or video editing, gaming, streaming, or other demanding work, consider 16 GB or more and check the requirements of the software you use. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is an installation floor, not a guarantee of a smooth experience.

Choose capacity by what you do at the same time

RAM is the short-term working space a computer uses for active apps and tasks. More capacity can help a device handle more work at once without slowdowns, but the right amount depends on your workload. Microsoft’s guidance offers ranges rather than a universal capacity for every user.

Use A practical starting point What to check
Basic browsing, documents, and online video 8 GB is a sensible starting point for a new device. Microsoft says at least 4 GB can support these activities and recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. Many open tabs, demanding sites, or other apps running together may call for more headroom.
Everyday computing and multitasking Consider 16 GB if budget and device options allow. Microsoft’s PC buying guide recommends 8–16 GB for multitaskers and describes 8 GB as fine for light browsing and most tasks. Think about how often you keep several apps, browser tabs, or large files open at once.
Photo/video editing or high-performance projects Start by considering 16 GB or more. Microsoft says this capacity range may suit editing and projects that need high performance. Check the current requirements of the specific application and the size and complexity of your projects; there is no universal higher threshold in the cited guidance.
Gaming or streaming Capacity may be closer to 16 GB; Microsoft lists entertainment configurations in an 8–16 GB+ range. Check each game’s current requirements and account for streaming software, browser tabs, or other apps running at the same time.
Copilot+ PC At least 16 GB. This is a requirement for the Copilot+ PC category, not the minimum for every Windows 11 computer.

These are practical readings of Microsoft’s published recommendations, not performance guarantees. An application’s requirements and the way you use the computer matter more than a single capacity number.

Understand minimum requirements versus useful capacity

Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum for Windows 11. That figure establishes a system requirement; it does not promise comfortable multitasking or smooth performance for every workload. In a separate memory explainer, Microsoft recommends 8 GB for longer-term use and says 16 GB or more may suit photo/video editing or high-performance projects.

Keep the categories distinct when comparing devices: Windows 11’s general minimum is 4 GB, while Copilot+ PCs have a separate 16 GB minimum. Neither minimum tells you exactly how much memory your own apps and tasks will use.

Check whether the exact PC or laptop can be upgraded

Do not assume a smaller configuration can be expanded later. RAM upgrade options depend on the particular computer, and the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish the construction or upgradeability of any specific model. Before buying, look up the exact model’s specifications and maintenance information, or ask the manufacturer or retailer.

If you are considering a desktop memory kit or laptop module, confirm platform compatibility before purchase. For a desktop, check the motherboard and processor support, memory generation, form factor, and desired capacity. For a laptop, first establish whether its memory is upgradeable and which type it supports. A capacity label alone does not verify compatibility.

A quick way to decide between two configurations

  1. List your usual simultaneous tasks. Separate light browsing and documents from editing, gaming, streaming, or running several intensive apps together.
  2. Use workload guidance, not the operating-system floor. Treat 4 GB as Windows 11’s minimum requirement, then compare your likely use with Microsoft’s higher recommendations.
  3. Check device category and model. Confirm whether the computer is a Copilot+ PC, and verify its exact memory configuration and upgrade options with the manufacturer or retailer.
  4. Check software-specific requirements. Consult the publisher’s current requirements for the apps or games you rely on, especially for editing and gaming.
  5. Choose the capacity that fits the whole ownership period. If a new general-purpose machine offers 8 GB or 16 GB and the budget allows, 16 GB leaves more room for multitasking; choose based on your workload and whether the configuration can be expanded later.
