If the top-row keys on your Dell laptop are acting differently than expected, press and hold Fn, then press Esc to toggle Function Key Lock. Press the same combination again to switch back. This affects the F1–F12 row; it does not unlock a keyboard where all keys have stopped working.
If letters type numbers, check Num Lock instead. If no keys respond, follow the separate troubleshooting steps below. Dell’s keyboard troubleshooting guide describes these as different issues.
Turn off Function Key Lock with Fn+Esc
Use this shortcut when the problem is limited to the function row—for example, F1–F12 control brightness or media, or you must hold Fn to use a function key. Dell’s instruction is: “Press and hold the Fn key, and then press the Escape key.” The combination toggles Function Key Lock; press it again to return to the previous behavior.
This is not a general keyboard lock. If letters, numbers, and other keys are all unresponsive, Fn+Esc is unlikely to address the cause.

Change the function-key setting in BIOS/System Setup
If you want to change the preferred function-row behavior rather than toggle it with the shortcut, Dell documents a BIOS/System Setup option. The available menu name depends on the BIOS interface and model.
- Restart the laptop.
- When the Dell logo appears, press F2 to enter System Setup.
- Look for Post Behavior > Fn Lock Options or, on another BIOS interface, Advanced > Function Key Behavior.
- Change the setting, then save and exit using the on-screen BIOS instructions.
If those labels are absent, consult the manual for your exact Dell model; the menu path is not identical across all Dell laptops.

If letters type numbers, check Num Lock
Some Dell laptop keyboards have dual-purpose letter keys that act as an embedded numeric keypad. When Num Lock is active, those keys can type numbers instead of letters. Num Lock is separate from Function Key Lock, so Fn+Esc may not fix this symptom.
The physical Num Lock key or shortcut varies by model. Check your laptop’s product manual to find the correct control rather than relying on a universal key combination.

If your Dell laptop keyboard is not typing
When some or all keys do not respond, check whether the issue is limited to one application or also occurs elsewhere. Dell recommends trying the on-screen keyboard where available, disconnecting peripherals and docks, and running its online or integrated keyboard diagnostics.
- Test another application: This helps determine whether the problem is confined to one program.
- Disconnect nonessential peripherals: Unplug docks and other connected devices before retesting.
- Try an external keyboard temporarily: It can provide input during troubleshooting, but it does not unlock or repair the built-in keyboard.
- Run Dell keyboard diagnostics: A pre-boot test can help determine whether the built-in keyboard is detected below the operating-system level.
- Record any diagnostic error and validation code: Keep both for support if the test reports a problem.
If only one key is stuck, Dell’s guide recommends turning off the computer, using compressed air around the key, and then retesting. Cleaning is not a guaranteed fix for a damaged key or keyboard.
