What does RAM capacity determine?
RAM is the computer’s short-term working memory for open programs and their active data. Capacity matters most when several programs or demanding tasks need to stay active at once. An operating-system minimum, an application’s minimum, and a recommendation for a particular workload are different thresholds: meeting a minimum does not guarantee that every workload will feel smooth.
How much RAM you need therefore depends on the software you use, the size and complexity of your projects, and what else is running at the same time. Check the requirements for your actual programs and tasks rather than treating one capacity as a universal rule.
How much RAM is enough for everyday use?
Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater as the memory minimum for Windows 11. That is an operating-system requirement, not a general recommendation for a comfortable everyday computer or a guarantee that multiple apps will run well together. The Microsoft requirements page does not state a universal everyday-use target.

For a computer you expect to use for several tasks at once, consider the apps you keep open and the work you do in them. Microsoft’s general memory guidance says 16 GB or more may be a good fit for photo or video editing and other high-performance projects; it does not prescribe that amount for every everyday user. Check the requirements for any demanding app you rely on.
How much RAM do you need for gaming?
There is no single gaming capacity established by the official sources cited here. Game requirements vary, and a general recommendation would need current, game-specific requirements or controlled comparisons to support it. Check the current requirements for each game you play rather than assuming one figure applies to all games.

Also consider what runs alongside the game. Streaming, keeping a browser or chat app open, using mods, or running other demanding tasks may affect the amount of memory your overall workload needs. Those are factors to check for your own setup, not quantified thresholds established by the sources cited here.
How much RAM do creative and work apps require?
Application requirements are more useful than a broad “work” category. Pay attention to whether a figure is a minimum for running the program or a recommendation for a particular kind of work.

Adobe Premiere Pro 26.x
Adobe lists 8 GB of RAM as the Windows minimum for Premiere Pro and specifies 32 GB or more for 4K and higher video. The 8 GB figure is a minimum, not the stated capacity for that high-resolution editing workload.
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum for Photoshop and recommends 16 GB or more. Use the recommendation alongside your actual projects and other open programs; the minimum alone does not describe every working scenario.

Other work applications
For other software, look up the current requirements for the exact application and the tasks you intend to perform. A general guideline cannot replace requirements tailored to a specific program, project size, or workflow.

A capacity recommendation does not tell you whether a particular memory kit will work in your computer. Before buying RAM, confirm the exact computer’s supported memory type and form factor, maximum capacity, available slots, and whether its memory is replaceable or soldered. Follow the computer manufacturer’s specifications for that model; the capacities listed for Windows or Adobe software do not establish hardware compatibility.

- Check whether the memory is soldered or can be replaced or expanded.
- Verify the supported memory generation and form factor.
- Confirm the maximum supported capacity and how many slots are available.
- Compare the computer’s specifications with the requirements of your intended workload.
If the computer does not permit a RAM upgrade, or does not support the capacity you want, a compatible kit cannot solve that limitation. Do not assume a kit fits based on capacity alone.
