Recall is a Mac app designed to help people resume work after switching tasks. It describes itself as a local-first AI memory companion: its vendor says the app analyzes screen context on the Mac and keeps work history in a local folder. That is a company claim, not an independently verified privacy guarantee.
This article covers Recall at joinrecall.com. It is not the similarly named article-saving service at recall.it, the iPhone app at recallmemoryapp.com, or the RecallWorks project for AI agents.
What does Recall do?
Recall is aimed at people who lose their place when moving between projects, apps, or documents. Its homepage presents the app as a way to hold onto a work thread and help you return to it. The interface depicts a held thread, work-pattern insights, and open loops.
Recall describes its interaction style this way: “No nudges. No cards. Quiet is the default, anything louder is opt-in. Recall holds the thread so you can keep going.” That is product positioning; the published material does not establish measured gains in productivity, focus, or memory.

What does Recall see while you work?
According to the Recall Trust Center, its work history includes app names, document titles, time on task, and switching patterns. The vendor says it uses macOS screen-capture permission and that its in-house Recall Core v1 model is trained to read a screen and identify what the user is working on.
Recall says the model downloads to the Mac at first launch and that analysis runs on the Mac. It says screenshots, window titles, and work descriptions are not sent to a cloud AI service. The Trust Center also says Recall does not access the microphone or camera and does not record system audio, calls, or video.

These are the vendor’s descriptions of its data handling. The reviewed material does not include an independent technical audit or network-traffic test confirming them.
Where does the data go?
Recall says work history is kept in a single local folder on the Mac, with no server copy. It says account, licence, payment, and email information, along with crash reports that do not contain work content, are the data that touch vendors.

Diagnostics sharing is off unless the user enables it. If you submit a bug report with diagnostics enabled, Recall says it may contain analysis traces, screenshots redacted on the Mac, and text you add. The company says it may review that report to address the issue and improve Recall Core.
“Local-first” describes a data approach, but is not by itself proof of a particular security standard. Recall’s Trust Center lists GDPR controls as implemented, SOC 2 as planned with no audit performed, and ISO 27001 as not started. Those statuses should not be read as certification.
