Use it to consider how clothing might look, but choose a size using the specific garment’s measurements and the retailer’s size information and return policy.
What ChatGPT’s virtual try-on shows
OpenAI’s Help Center says a “Try on” button appears on clothing and accessory product listings. You can select it, take or upload a selfie, and view a generated try-on image. You can also upload a picture of clothing or an accessory in a ChatGPT conversation and ask to see how it might look on you. The feature uses ChatGPT Images to generate a visual preview.
OpenAI’s guidance is explicit: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” That means the image is not a size recommendation or a substitute for the merchant’s product information.
How to choose a size instead
For the purchase decision, check the measurements and size information for the particular item, along with its product details and return policy. Sizing and return terms can differ by garment and retailer, so check the listing you plan to buy from rather than relying on a general chart alone.

- Find the garment’s measurements and the retailer’s size information on the product listing.
- Compare those details with your own measurements if the retailer’s chart calls for them. A flexible measuring tape can help you take measurements for that comparison; it does not make the try-on image more accurate.
- Review product details that may affect your choice and check the retailer’s return policy before ordering.
OpenAI recommends checking the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy before buying. The try-on image can be one input for appearance or styling, but the available official guidance does not support using it to choose between sizes.
Why a convincing image is not proof of fit
Image-generation guidance describes visual goals: preserve the person’s face, body shape, pose, hair, and identity while changing the garment. OpenAI’s image-evaluation guidance also considers whether the person and garment details are preserved, whether only the needed region is edited, and whether the result looks physically plausible. Those criteria assess the generated image; they do not establish how a particular size would fit in real life.

Size-aware fit is a separate challenge in virtual try-on research. A 2026 CHI paper reports that participants in its study saw the inability to generate size-dependent fit variations as a limitation of the system studied. A 2023 ICCV paper specifically addresses size-aware virtual try-on. Neither paper is a performance test of ChatGPT’s current feature, so neither provides an accuracy rate for it.
Is there a published accuracy percentage?
The cited OpenAI guidance does not give a measured size-prediction accuracy rate, and the cited virtual try-on studies do not measure ChatGPT’s current feature. There is therefore no supported percentage or error rate to use when deciding whether a generated image predicts a garment’s fit.

What happens to a reference photo?
OpenAI says reference photos are saved for future try-ons. You can change or remove them in Settings → Personalization → Reference photos.
