For the clearest ChatGPT clothing try-on, start with a clear reference image and use the built-in Try on option on a clothing or accessory listing. You can also upload an item photo in a chat and ask ChatGPT to show how it might look on you. Treat the result as an approximate visualization—not proof of exact appearance, fit, or size.

OpenAI describes this workflow in its Shopping with ChatGPT Search help page. Its October 1, 2026 release note says the feature is available on web and mobile; availability and controls may change.

Try an item from a photo
You can also upload a picture of clothing or an accessory in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. OpenAI documents this as an alternative to the product-listing control, though the generated image remains an approximation.
What makes a reference image more useful?
Begin with a clear, unambiguous image of the item or person you want ChatGPT to use. OpenAI’s image-input guidance says unclear or ambiguous images can be interpreted less accurately, and that uploaded images are resized before analysis. This is general guidance for image inputs, not a clothing-specific formula or a promise of improved try-on results.

OpenAI does not publish clothing-try-on requirements for pose, distance, garment visibility, background, or lighting. Avoid treating any particular setup as an officially recommended checklist.

Give one concrete correction at a time—for example, ask for a specific visible detail to change. You may describe the change directly or highlight an area and describe the edit.

Review the whole image after each edit. OpenAI cautions that highlighted areas are not always precise and changes can extend beyond the selection.

Does a ChatGPT try-on tell you whether clothes will fit?
No. OpenAI says try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size. A generated image is a visualization, not evidence that a garment will fit your body in real life.
Before buying, check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy. Use those sources for size and purchase decisions; use the try-on image only to get an approximate visual impression.
How to change or delete your try-on reference photo
OpenAI says the reference photo can be reused for future try-ons. To replace or remove it, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. The control names and availability may change as ChatGPT is updated.
