First check whether Android still opens. If it does, back up important data and try low-risk checks before changing anything. If the phone stays at the Google logo, keeps restarting, opens Recovery or Fastboot, or shows a blank screen, use Google’s device-specific recovery guidance—and understand the data-loss risk before resetting or flashing it.
Identify what the phone can still do
Note what happens when you turn the Pixel on: Android opens normally or briefly; it repeatedly restarts at the Google logo; it opens Recovery or Fastboot; or the display stays blank. The right next step depends on that state. If Android opens even briefly, use that opportunity to back up irreplaceable data before troubleshooting.
A failure after an update is not proof that the update caused it. The official guidance below covers general crashes and recovery options, but no procedure can promise to restore every phone or recover all its data.
If Android still opens
Google’s general advice for a Pixel that restarts or crashes is a cautious sequence of checks. These steps may help with general instability; they are not a guaranteed fix for a failed system update.

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- Back up important data. Do this before removing apps or making other changes, while the phone is usable.
- Check for an Android update. Open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the available update instructions. Menu wording can vary by Android version.
- Check free storage. Google says a phone can have issues when less than 10% of its storage is available. This is Google’s troubleshooting threshold, not a measure of how often updates fail. Review storage in Settings > Storage and free space if needed.
- Remove recently downloaded apps one at a time. Restart the phone after each removal to see whether the problem changes. If it does, the most recently removed app may be relevant.
- Temporarily remove accessories. Take off the case and disconnect external battery accessories that could cover sensors or press buttons while you troubleshoot.
Google’s full instructions are on its Fix a Pixel phone that’s restarting or crashing page.
If the phone will not boot into Android
When the Pixel remains at the logo, loops through restarts, or opens Fastboot or Recovery, do not start by downloading firmware from an unofficial source. Google provides a Pixel Update and Software Repair tool; its instructions ask you to connect the phone in Fastboot mode to a computer using USB. Follow the current on-page steps for your model. The tool’s availability or behavior may change, and its instructions do not guarantee that every failure can be repaired.

Google also documents full OTA images as an option for restoring Pixel firmware, including after a failed over-the-air update. Use the package and instructions for the exact device and build. This is distinct from flashing a factory image, which Google says requires a full device reset.
Know the data risk before resetting or flashing
Google’s Pixel Phone Help states: “A factory data reset will remove all data from your phone.” Back up first if you can. After a reset, backed-up Google Account data may be restored, but apps and their associated data are uninstalled. Google says a reset can also be started with the phone’s buttons if the device is unresponsive or blank; follow its official instructions rather than guessing at a button sequence.

Google’s factory-image documentation says flashing a factory image requires a full device reset. Using the Android Flash Tool requires unlocking the bootloader, which also triggers a full reset and removes user data. These are not data-preserving alternatives to a reset. The factory-image instructions may include device- and build-specific details, so do not apply a procedure written for another Pixel or build.

When to stop and get help
Contact Google support or an appropriate repair provider if the official steps do not restore the phone, the instructions do not match your model, or you cannot accept the risk of losing local data. Repair options and eligibility depend on your location and current circumstances; check directly rather than assuming a particular outcome.
